You can use the following wallets for Desktop -

  • Electrum - This lightweight desktop bitcoin wallet supports multiple operating systems such as Windows, Mac, etc. It is integrated with premium hardware wallets such as TREZOR, KeepKey and Ledger Nano S.
  • Exodus - Exodus supports over 100+ cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dash, Zcash, Ethereum among the popular ones. This was primary a desktop wallet, with them recently entering into mobile.
  • Gaurda - Guarda is the first multi cryptocurrency wallet, which supports the most popular crypto coins and tokens including Zcash, BTC, ETH (+ERC20 tokens), ETC, Zcash, Ripple, DASH, latest EOS, and other multiple altcoins. The private key is stored in the device’s secure memory and deletes itself if you log out from the wallet.

There are many other wallets like - Jaxx, Armory etc. But I prefer using Exodus, it is my top choice, however be aware that they charge fees on exchanging coins.

Or can anyone send me links to older versions of wallets that could work...?I couldn't find any...
Try using the wasabi wallet.
https://wasabiwallet.io/#download
I looked on the website wasabi can be used for mac 10.2+

Older version of electrum is not recommended.maybe in 2017 or Beginning of 2018 I saw a post in bitcointalk. In that post they told to upgrade electrum wallet as soon as possible.because in that version users found vulnerability. So better not to use old version.
The following is an official explanation from the developer Electrum

why electrum not supporting in 10.8.5 ? Though my version is upgraded than OP.whats wrong with that version ?
Older versions would probably work. But I really don't think I would suggest downloading older versions of certain wallets, knowing that there might be vulnerabilities in older versions of these wallets that hasn't been fixed, especially for Electrum. If possible, I'd definitely suggest downloading updated wallets that support older OSX versions instead. One being Wasabi in OP's case. And yes I also suggest Ledger of course, but I'm not sure if the newest version of Ledger Live would work on OP's device.

Can you tell us what feature you're looking for specifically so we can help you a lot more easily? Because like what I've said on my previous reply, using an older version of a wallet app is really not recommended due to potential security reasons.

You can use coinomi: https://www.coinomi.com/en/downloads/

Please understand the risks and do not use software wallets to store huge amounts.

1. Coinomi requires OSX 10.10, and OP only has OSX 10.8.5(as per the title)
2. As far as I know, Coinomi isn't open source. So that's a big no for me. Unless OP is just storing like $50 worth of funds.

Ah, sorry I misread the topic.

And Coinomi has been around since like last 5 years and I am using it since it's inception as well, it was open source in the start then scammers started making it's clones and started publishing it on play store (at that time only android version was available) so it was later made closed source , pretty sure you can trust it for more than $50, however no coded thing is full proof hence it's always a good idea to be cautious against software wallets specially.

Actually there are multiple wallet that can be used for mac osx  and I will recommend just  of them. I am using Nano Ledger S while most of my friends were using Exoddus, Jaxx and Trezor. I would highly recommend these four but if you are still in search for others you can also try Armory, Copay, KeepKey, Electrum.

1. Jaxx and Exodus aren't really that reputable in terms of security
2. OP has OSX 10.8.5. Jaxx, Electrum, and a few others requires a higher OSX version

I will not recommend Jaxx too, I was their user before, and got lot of issues using their app (Win, Linux & iOS versions)
On mobile I switched to Trust app, only for small amounts, but for keeping my hodl crypto safe I use Ledger Nano S and paper wallets

Aren't there older versions of electrum that would be available to download, but they wouldn't be as updated or secure as the new bitcoin wallets, obviously? But they still work, don't they?

Ledger live would work with that os version I reckon, it's only an 80 dollar wallet and you'll be incredibly secured and from then on you'll be able to access it via your laptop, and phone (if you have a USBc to your phone cable).

Good luck op, I recommend the ledger purchase a lot.

Bummer that you probably can't use Electrum with your OSX version. You might want to try Wasabi wallet[1] though, it's one of the most privacy-focused bitcoin wallets we have right now. It requires Mac OSX 10.2+ so it should probably work on your device.
