Can the government shut down the internet? Yes they can!

First, why do you think this?

actually you can do that (like north korea).  but then: welcome to the stoneage!  Grin

and in 5-10 years there will be alot of sattelites which will bring the internet (and Bitcoin) in every corner of the world.

(there will be even BITCOIN SATELLITES  Cheesy  )
http://www.coindesk.com/bitcoin-nanosatellites-orbit-earth-2016/

Wasn't there a group that was attempting to transmit the blockchain through RF?
A Finnish group if I am not mistaken.
They said they were working on ways to make it a two way transmission too.

i was just going to talk about this, keep in mind that we could still transmit zeros and ones over Rf signals yes it might take a about 2 minutes for a signal to travel around the world but we could defendly do it.

First, why do you think this?

Theoretically the Internet can be shutdown.... That's not the question. The question is, can they delete the blockchain from every computer which downloaded it? Well, you know the answer...

The gov can shut down the electric grid..

TURN OFF ALL ELECTRICY STOP BEING DEPENDENT ON IT..

99% population loss EASILY in all western countries if electricy went down.. easily..

I'd recoken 80% pop loss if the web was down for longer than a month

With the SAFE project a global meshnet will be posible to the point we don't need ISPs. Kim Dotcom is also working on a decentralized internet. And in any case, if they wanted to shut it down the Bitcoin whales would launch satellites to keep running it.

nop, i don't know what mesh network is.
and yes you can connect two computers and make your own internet.
But the blockchain would not be efficient? mining?

with a mesh network you can propagate your lan basically and having a internet that it is completely decentralized

but like anything else it does not come without cons

First, why do you think this?

because apparently he don't now about the fact that you can actually replicate internet by connecting two computer, lan is internet just with few machines, so no governments can't do shit

also i think he never heard of mesh network right...

a better argument would have been that miners control bitcoin, which is somehow true

Well you can't really say 'controls' Bitcoin. I can answer this question to some degree.
Who controls gold? Anyone who owns/uses it. The same principle can be applied to Bitcoin. Bitcoin has no central authority, thus it can't be shut down.

Can the government shut down the internet? Yes they can!
First, why do you think this?
It's a common misconception.

I was just watching a conspiracy video on youtube.
It was talking about how the government can shut down the internet, the actual video had nothing to do with bitcoins, but surprisingly the main reason of the shut down was because of an impending financial collapse caused by Israel attacking Iran, since they disagree withe the nuke deal, something looking very likely to happen..

here is the video

All im saying, is this made sense 2 years ago, and is looking more likely.

Bitcoin is a symptom of the internet right? so whoever controls the internet controls bitcoins..

Can the government shut down the internet? Yes they can!
So who controls bitcoin?

Governements controls internet and they can shutdown but they won't , do you imagine the financial losses if the internet just shutdown for 5mn on the whole world ? well it's huge .
Bitcoin is decentralized but governement should be able to ban Bitcoin or block it somehow since it's Peer to peer and they is no way in hell all countries agree to shutdown bitcoin

Since the world has plenty of governments, the internet cannot actually be "shut down".
Since the blockchain is copied and synced between quite a lot of computers (milions?) we can safely tell that nobody controls bitcoin.
