I'm not mad, I'm actually rather amused. (what really made me laugh was your "CC NC, of course")

I like the alpaca better anyway.

The bitcoin enterprise is non-commercial. There is no overarching bitcoin company that makes profit from bitcoin use.

You're right, but every bitcoin company that wanted to use it would have to ask. That means a flood of emails, constant annoyance on both side of the matter, and ultimately, selection of a different mascot.

1. Unholster pistol.
2. carefully aim at left big toe.
3. squeeze trigger.

I will grant the "Official" was wrong, though.

Dude, she just wanted to share her work. She made something and was proud of it and wanted to show it to a community that she thought might appreciate it. Maybe the choice of licensing was wrong for *this* purpose but she didn't make it for *this* purpose.

And for those who are pissed that she licensed it at all, here in the U.S. you have to - otherwise your work is considered copyrighted by default (http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92appa.html -or- http://www.copyright-laws.com/pgs/copyright-basics.html for those that don't speak legalese)
This would be why bitcoin is released under the MIT license, Linux under the GPL license, BSD under (go figure) the BSD license, FireFox under the MPL (Mozilla Public License) and so on. She wanted her work to be publicly available but didn't want it to be ganked for corporate misuse by the first company that liked it so she CC licensed it non-commercial.

Nothing is stopping her from changing that license if the situation changes and you all seriously need to go take a Xanax or something before you pop a vessel over someone you don't know choosing a license you don't like for IP that you have no stake in... Yeesh.

Let me get this straight...

You licensed your submission to an OFFICIAL MASCOT competition... Non-commercial?

That's rich.

Official? Wha?

Yeah I must have missed the press conference where Satoshi announced this contest.

The image already existed in its current state and licensing before this post was created. She just wanted to share her work. Don't bitch because you don't agree with the specific license she chose, I can smell the BSD vs GPL bloodbath in the air already and it smells like shit.

Hostility much? I don't give a shit about what license you choose. I am just pointing out how licenses like that limits the spread of a work.

That's nonsense.  Instead, what we have is a community of self-interest and sometime altruistically motivated user. So we're commercially oriented community of bitcoiners.

CC is public domain with the only restrictions in this case being an attribution requirement and a non-commercial restriction. Boy you must also hate BSD, Linux, Apache, Firefox, etc. what with their "restrictive" license requirements that are only in place to give credit for good work and protect from commercial misuse.

For the record, I am just pointing out a strategic mistakes in propagating memes even if that mean sacrificing author attribution and protection from "commercial misuse".

Yes, I am a public domain proponent, as my whole magazine is published under the public domain. Still, don't let that dissuade you from accepting a good argument.

Bad license. Bitcoin logos are public domain for a reason. Even the Bitsquirrel are public domain.

In the race for mascot dominance, it is fatal to have copyright restriction.

I made sure that is 800x600 resolution, I am pretty sure that is the most common desktop dimensions size.

800x600 as a common desktop size? Maybe in 1993 =)  I'm sure your average BitcoinPorn images are larger than that!!

Hm. My roommate's an artist and he does like drawing cartoons. Maybe I should try to have him do something. Smiley

Any suggestions for starting points?
