It is the electricity / hash rate ratio that is going to determine profitability. No good having a fast hash rate that guzzles lots of power. Hence ASICS.

Yes, eventually, but right now its the ROI on the initial capital invested that is the key metric. In that sense GPUs and FPGAs are already dead (except for mining with existing kit, and its there that GPUs are hitting the power limit, unless you've got free electric). Unfortunately ASICs are vastly overpriced for their expected ROI, so its not a money making proposition. The prices will have to fall (and its started with the ASICminer usb erupters dropping from 2BTC to 1BTC, though still overpriced IMHO). The manufacturers are laughing all the way to the bank (the usb eruptors have an estimated marginal cost of just $25 to manufacture), at least those that are able to ship product anyway.

There is some serious stuff in the pipeline however (>4 TH) : http://thegenesisblock.com/amc-announces-4-8-ths-bitcoin-miners-for-3000-btc/

Interesting. Discussion is at https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/amc-the-official-active-mining-cooperative-discussion-158806 (beware, that's a self-moderated thread).

Seems to be mostly a fund-raising operation, with some pretty vaporware on their web site. Avalon clones, with plans for a MPW prototype run of a "World’s Fastest Bitcoin Minnig (sic) Chip" 28nm giving 20GHash/sec (compare KNCMiner's 100GHash/sec, lol).

I'll put it on the list of ones to watch, but it smells somewhat scammy to my nose.

Edit: Also at https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/vmc-official-virtual-mining-corporation-discussion-206488 (self moderated)

I have upgraded my assessment to ...
Scam

I would simply want to buy an ASIC cash though, and not with bitcoin. the whole point of me wanting an ASIC miner is that I can mine bitcoin I don't already have. -.- I came across an English website that claimed to sell GPU and ASIC miners. They would ship the GPU miners on purchase but would add you to a waiting list if you bought an ASIC.

Aside from BFL, who else is currently selling ASIC miners? Are they actually being delivered unlike BFL's products? I'm thinking of purchasing one to start mingin as I notice GPU mining BTC is soon to die out.

you need to be extremely careful, don't rush and order the first good thing, that seems good.

Not by how nice their website is, their nice promises, etc.

You learn quickly here that our tend to firstly trust people will bite you very fast.

+1 on that thought.!

With the current difficulty rising, If you order one today, i doubt if you will be making any profit out of those, unless you buy a high end ASIC.

I have a few Avalons (in-hand) that I am about to sell.  Look for a post tomorrow or the next day if interested Smiley, fuck waiting or buying a preorder (super risky IMO).

No, not kiddin. Just escaped Newbie Jail myself 10 days ago. Still feel a bit sorry for the inmates.

Could you get into detail plz... just curious

Nothing wrong with ASICs. Other than the price. So I'm paying it forward, for a little while anyway.

ROI is important. If you're new here I guess you don't want to get burned if you take up mining.

Just do your research. That's all.

Yap, definitely sth different than buying another 5970... Wink

I'm new to the forum but into mining since 2009 and have a KnC Jupiter on order... let's pray, pray, pray they are real!  Roll Eyes Grin

Oh , this may help http://www.coinish.com/calc (expert mode).

Great site, great tool, great job! Yours?

Aha, my hobbyhorse!

Why do you want to buy? Magic money tree? Ain't no such thing.

Bitcoin laundering? A bit advanced for newbieland. look it up later  Smiley

So you want to know if its worth it? Look away now for the faint of heart!

Go here http://www.coinish.com/calc fill in your hash rate, purchase cost, plenty of other things to play with.

Select Expert Mode and check your "Break even considering reduction"

Still want to buy? Great, plenty of sellers on ebay or our Custom Hardware threads.

Enjoy suckers  Lips sealed

Ahh, but you assume people will only want to mine Bitcoin with ASICS. Ppcoin is sha256 as well.
