it is expensive.. but then again people pay a couple hundred in FIAT just to see Bieber for 3 hours. i prefer to spend a couple hundred for a couple days of bitcoin rather than seeing that little twit

why is everyone into bieber..
his songs doesn't sound nice,
i would go to bruno mars concert, song rocks.

thats my point. if people are stupid enough to pay a coupl hundred for that lame ass, they'd pay anything for something with actual substance

this is why I'm working toward bringing a free event for the community. powered by volunteers and sponsors.

there are already hundreds if not thousands of fre events. they are called 'meetups'
if its just a few people meeting up in a non booked destination (pub, bar, coffee shop) they are free and last a few hours.
but the bigger the attendance, the requirement to book a hall, food, hotel, and pay for speaker. The more it costs

Time to grow up boys. Bitcoin is big business now. .5 BTC is very fair. These conferences (the good ones) help investors and business people to share the latest, build relationships that are needed for collaboration all so that the next level of bitcoin infrastructure can develop ASAP. Without this community building, the explosive next wave of mass adoption could stall.

I guarantee you these conferences are not the BS corporate seminar meetings that waste everyone's time, or that you send interns to or a how to get rich investment seminar. These are mostly packed with real entrepreneurs and investors looking for the right place to put resources and make wise strategic decisions. You need best information and trusted relationships for that. It is also important because it gets the best minds and thinkers in the bitcoin world to meet each other and challenge each others ideas. This network will become more and more important as bitcoin faces legal, technical, political and other challenges along the way. Of course some of this can happen virtually, some of this just works better in person. That's why smart business people do it.

If you don't need to go, because you are not dong anything significant in the btc world, and the investment is not worth it to you, then you obviously should not go. No one is forcing you. But please have some respect for the people taking risk to make these conferences happen. And do not doubt that they are a very important part of the growth/adoption story.

And finally - as the last poster said...if you want to make something happen that will work better for you...make it so...and let us all know about it!

Leave no FUD unchallenged
If you want a cheaper conference, your best bet is to start laying the foundations yourself to make it happen.  If you're waiting for someone else to do it for you, you might be waiting for a long time.

Granted I haven't paid a great deal of attention to it, but the forum does have a Meetups section if you're going to organise something.

Come original.
They cost a lot of money to run, but that doesnt mean they should charge such ridiculous prices.

The better question to be asking is why are people paying the silly prices? If people are willing and prepared to get fleeced then they will.

Random "Joe" (not talking about Americans...i'm talking about International random "Joe") is really....REALLY stupid. I'm not talking only about prices that ppl are ready to pay connected to BTC, i'm talking to every day stuff people pay, that they dont have to, or can buy better and cheeper, or even make themselves. Is it laziness, is it lack of information, or plain and simple stupid, i have no idea, but it is how it is and those that have ambition are living out of it (inside BTC ecosystem, or out of it).

For comparison sake--  Superreturn, the major private equity conference costs about $5000 for a regular, standard ticket.   (Not a misprint)

Conferences are expensive.

I'm running the Dubai Bitcoin Conference.

Some conferences have lost money, most just break even.

For me this one is a labor of love-- I want to see more info about Bitcoin spread.

Interesting the mention of a decentralized conference.   We thought about making this one run by a token and let everyone chip in for speaker and other costs and also share in any profit.

People are ready to pay ALOT almost everything connected about Bitcoin. Did you see all BTC miners on Ebay? They are selling! It's undesrtandable that seminars are hot too. GHS on cloud mining services are going by ridiculous prices. Almost everything connected to BTC is going far above real price. It's just the way it is, and if you have some business potentional in yourself, you can use it to earn a living out of it.

If you mean conferences ....

The excuse usually given is that its for entrepreneurs and business owners.

They garner financial benefit from it by meeting others in the industry, therefore they pay to attend.

A lot of the Bitcoin conferences have not been for enthusiasts/hobbyists.

yes, i mean conferences.

There's one conference like that coming up shortly where I live. And... thinking about the price of it... Yep - I'd be better off simply buying BTC with that $$$.

And given how BTC prices go, I could then attend 10 conferences next year! Smiley

recently there were a couple of bitcoin conferences too where i lived. Had to give it a miss due to high price.

Every seminar is this way.  I attend some seminars for work and they're very expensive affairs.  I don't get why companies spend tens of thousands (flights / hotels / booking fees) to have representation at the seminar but 90% send some intern or lowly employee who can't answer simple questions.

Can't complain since I get to attend them for free and I get all the free pencils, USB sticks and candy I want.   Grin

Seminars, if the big shots bother to show up, is all about networking and socialites.

How effective are they?  Probably not.  It's a relic (a dinosaur) from the pre-internet age.  Considering these Bitcoin / coin seminars only attract hundreds, what good does it do when it's a market involving millions of people?
