Strength in numbers
Why? Right after you ban them, they will just create a new account anyhow, banned or not. Plus banning them would not give them a chance to pay back if they intended to do so. I've read some do pay back. There are plenty of posts about this.

i've never heard of one scammer that pays back.

Wasn't Matthew tagged as a scammer? Then worked out to pay everybody back, then mark untrustworthy? Then, I myself, seen quite a few scammers pay back. DYFR. Oh yea, look, maybe this is why.

Tarnish the users at bitcoinscammers.com I think that accusations should be backed by proof and it would be hard to do here with so many members.

You should leave the scammer BFL at the top. Don't want it to get buried, it's going down the page.

scammers have a conscience? no way! i've never heard of one scammer that pays back.

also, we need to do something about these derptards that call scam on everything. its hard to get legitimate funding/ donations without having to give away your idea to be stolen because no one trusts anybody. you almost have to lie about what you need the funding for, unless you want your idea to be stolen by someone with more resources at their disposal than you have.

The system is pretty good, banning them is like a dictatorship like someone who has already said about. The current system works.

LTC -> BTC -> Silver!
I like the system as it stands. When I see someone has a scammer tag, I can investigate to see what their scam was and be aware of how people are being scammed. The more information at my disposal, the better.

If we IP ban them, then they know that they just have to change their IP. However, if we don't IP ban them, they often keep using the same IP address and are caught the very first time someone even thinks that the user might be a scammer. This causes scammers to waste more time for less benefit.
Don't ban scammers, just silently blackhole them so they they they are still posting but nobody else sees their posts or PMs.

I do not agree with this.  What if scammer have donated money to the forum, or plan to in the future.  Do you want the forum to just lose out on this possible money?  A donator or advertiser should not get a scammer tag for scamming.  Also what about the occasional scam where the mods are involved or running it, should they ban themselves?  LOL.

Keep your friends close. But keep your enemies closer :-)

Seriously though, if we banned scammers then Matthew Wright wouldn't know when I was making fun of him.

Very true, they will always come back. It is very difficult to stop ban evaders, I suppose the hope is that they will continue to use that account in shame. From what I've seen this forum is strongly against limiting speech in any way which is a plus.

I guess it makes sense to just brand them with the scammer tag so it's evident, but who says they don't already have separate accounts to scam others already? Not every scammer is a genius, and might not be able to figure out a way to connect again if their IP was banned. Just saying.

It's called using your brain and investigating people's habits. A example is me, I like to end or begin a post with four dashes most of the time.

A lot of people don't capitalize 'i'
Some people don't end with punctuation.

Most of the time people have habits, and you could most likely draw something from that. If they're a huge scam artist, and have been planning their scam for months, we just have to be cautious, eh?

This. There is absolutely no value in banning an account that has already been tagged. IP bans are more effective in theory. In practice, not so much.

If you do a search of the Meta section, I bet you can find a few times this question has been asked before.

As mentioned above, if you ban somebody they will just make a new account and start over again. But also, even if they are a scammer they can still contribute meaningful dialog to the discussions on the forum, the scammer tag just warns people not to trust them with money.

Banning people is what fake democracies and dictatorships do, for the most part we're all Libertarians and Anarchists here Tongue

Why ban them? It's a badge of honor. You know like the jail tattoo things? The bigger your scammer tag, the higher your standing in this den of scam and villainy. Also the redder your ignore status is, the more likely it is you're an undercover cop.
