It was disabled because some hacker uploaded malicious code using the avatar upload system a long time ago. I asked the same question when I registered.
there is is always someone who ruins it for everybody. i hope the new forum software has better options like following the posts that i like and gives announces when someone quotes or responds to my posts.
Stay tuned, I think it will be very great Wink
At a budget of a million dollars, paying out $100k per month for four programmers, I would certainly hope the new software is well beyond "very great".

I thought the budget is adjusted at approximately 300k$?

No , in one post theymos said that the estimate price of the new forum software is ~ 1mln of $ ... but I can't find the exact thread.

~EDIT :

The $350,000 was just a down payment or the full amount owed? If it is not the full amount how much more could this end up costing us?

The total cost will probably be around $1 million. The $350,000 covers several months of work, after which I will evaluate the performance of Slickage Studios and choose whether or not to continue. In any case, the code will be open source, so no work will be lost.

When will the software be finished?

About one year from now.

Really?
It's the 1st time I hear this story... does someone know how could it be technically possible to send a malware simply uploading images?
And with new forum update why won't it be possible too?

1) http://www.pcworld.com/article/2105408/3/watch-out-for-photos-containing-malware.html
2) http://security.stackexchange.com/questions/55061/can-malware-be-attached-to-an-image

Current forum uses SMF which lacks security but the New forum won't use this and will have better security. Smiley

P.S. You can easily change the extension of a file too. Roll Eyes

I saw a lot of older people with avatars but new people don't have them.  When can I change my avatar?

When the new forum software gets released in a few months.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=167.0
How did u get ur avatar though?

He got avatar before the security breach that resulted in the change of avatars being disabled.

But he can't change or delete it.

Think you can request getting your avatar removed but it can't be changed to anything else as far as I know.
