You can, the only element missing is the community karma you think you earn for tipping someone publicly. I just reconfigured my sig so you can click on the link when you have a desktop Bitcoin client installed.

More info about how that works: https://electrum.org/bitcoin_URIs.html

I just sent the OP a tip and can confirm that tipping is allowed.  Grin

Thanks.  Only just seen yr reply.  That was you was it?  Thought it was something else.   Undecided

There any sites that notify you when a particular address goes up or down?

You can watch addresses with blockchain.info and you'll get a notification whenever someone sends or receives a payment.

I suppose you can tip with sigs but that involves everyone having an account with the 3rd party tipping site.  Building it into the forum itself would be more convenient but means that they have to worry about storing every bodies wallet details and doing the processing themselves.  Probably not something I would want to commit to.  Are there any other options?

As for being a "money transmitter".  We have seen how that is starting to be regulated.

Develop a module for tips would be an overkill.

There are more important priorities right now

Many people displaying their bitcoin address in signatures or in their profile but there is no option to tip directly.

Have you tried clicking on the tip.me address as seen below? You click it, click "Tip directly with Bitcoin", a QR code comes up, the address comes up that you can copy and paste, or you can actually click on the address and Bitcoin Core will popup with the address already filled in. It seems pretty easy IMHO.

Here is a reply from theymos :

I've thought about that before, but I think that there might be legal problems with that. It might make the forum a "money transmitter".

Speaking of tips, I just put up the new coinbase tip button on my site. I'd love some support from the community to see if it works :-)

http://coinedbits.com/

reply with your impressions of the tip process. There are two options, 1) from coinbase account balance. 2) from bitcoin address.

Let me know what you think of the placement of the tip button as well. I'm worried people won't notice it.

Looking fresh friend, hope yoiu get some donations. Did you have to do anything special to get in under for fixed navbar? No matter what I do, i cannot get the button under my fixed nav, z-index doesnt do anything =(

I think it would work better than a +1 here because rather than just saying +1 or thanks you could send a few satoshis. I'd like to see it added. I don't think it would cause any harm and would be a nice way of people getting some extra btc even if the amounts were tiny but they still all add up.

I think it's great idea & it's even better if we can made tip anonymous.

But, i think only few people will use it's feature.
And it's not easy to add feature like that.

I think if people use it on reditt I can't see why they wouldn't use it here as well. I don't think it would be incredibly difficult to implement.

Someone sent me a tip once just for my username  Grin but I think it was less than a dollar. Still, it was a nice gesture and appreciated.

And it's not easy to add feature like that.

I think it would be used quite a bit but just for small amounts. I'd like to see it as it is a nice reward for people and rewards good community members.

New forum software is being developed and should be active early next year with a beta test arriving soon. And no, nobody really donates anymore.

that would be really cool and breath new life into this forum

Lolled so hard. Considering that bitcointalk hasn't been improved at all in the past years, I would be surprised if Thermos has any developments for the future in his mind.

Does anyone still send money to these crooks btw?

Yes, but it's not very convenient that way. How many people actually get tips on here? Very few. If there was a easy one or two click function to tip tiny amounts of bitcoin (one of the good features about these is sending without fees) then more people would likely do it.
