32. Posting multiple posts in a row (excluding bumps and reserved posts by the thread starter) is not allowed.
Reserved posts tend to be allowed for thread starter (author) as the rule presents. I am not sure (just my rule interpretation).

Me
  • Character limits: if I think OP exceeds the limit, I will make some reserved posts
  • I use Reserved posts when I feel that I will have more updates for my topics. Those updates will be supplementary for OPs. Sometimes I have clear plans that how many posts I will made to support OPs. Sometimes, I don't have clear plan, just know I will have a few more updates.
  • Reserved posts will prevent unexpected breaks between OP and my updates if someone join my threads and leave replies.
  • Of course, if don't have update at the ends, those reserved posts should be deleted. Honestly, I never mind to do it (my bad).

The others might have other reasons but theirs will have some common reasons with me (not all, certainly).

Cons
  • I see some people use Reserved when they apply in signature campaigns that is not necessary. In my opinion, they can post the dummy application post (without detail) and edit it with details later. Most of campaigns as I know not "First come, first serve" campaign so they don't have to hurry with Reserved posts.
  • Some spammers have their creative post style: Make reserved posts to get enough post quota before the deadline. They will return to edit their Reserved posts to shitposts.

If you feel at some point the OP will not provide space enough for all edits and updates that you want at the start of the thread.

It depends on of the user how they will use it. When I do, I do it to have an update about the topic, maybe to have a summary of the topic, maybe to have a list of the collective responses.
I would understand it if you posted a reserve as an update, but this isn't an update. It is right after you submit your post. What's the purpose of doing it immediately?
As I stated in my first response it is a placeholder. The reason for posting it immediately after the OP, is to reserve the spot for future use sometimes it's only the second post position, some people will reserve a couple spaces.

It unfortunately seems common practice on the forum for many users to not read the OP, or then digest the rest of the thread before they post.

Now if people actually read the OP, then scroll down to read the thread before posting they will come across these "RESERVED" posts - but let's say it's been a month since the OP was written, and maybe there have been changes made. If the poster feels it is necessary, useful or helpful they might log these changes in the post that was formerly just "RESERVED"

You have probably already read some topics that have used this strategy, because they don't always leave "RESERVED" in the post after editing in whatever they deemed relevant.

Others have also pointed out another possible reason for doing it, which is to purposefully but out of necessity(This is subjective) multipost an OP that benefits from being broken up.

I've noticed that when someone announces something important like a signature campaign or a topic like this, they reply with "reserve" right after they submit their post. Why? What's the purpose?
AFAIK, there are character limits per post in bitcointalk so in case if someone is going to update their Post in future which may exceeds the maximum characters allowed to write in their post that is why they are reserving another post or even more for future updates.

In simple word, it’s a menu for that particular thread where OP supposed to be posting the updates. Users will get all the updates if they check that post later although some don't update.
OR it is possible that OP wants to post a large texts which can't be posted in single post.

Maybe that is for other information that people needed or they want to add something. Only a person who creates a thread that will know for sure. You don't have to post a reserve if you don't want. I already have seen some thread which has a reserve post in a thread, and that is not only one reserve, but sometimes it contains 2, 3, or even 5 reserve post.

Some do it, because they've seen other, more experienced posters and campaign managers do it, without really knowing why, but for some reason they think it makes them look important.

Gamble responsibly
Some people will log updates or changes to the OP in that post
I do not think it will be necessary to change the OP, but I think it can be used to add additional information to the operative board above. If someone want to change the operative board completely, I think creating another thread will be the best. I have seen some campaigns on this forum where the campaign manager will not have any option than to just have to create another thread and the the old ones left behind. The reserved is more of a additional information that could later be added as me update to the OP imo.

I think in simple understanding, it for whatever will come in the future and maybe I would like them to be highlighted in the reserved spot so that for the readers it is easy to find the updates.

The purpose of doing it immediately is because you do not want this post buried after several posts from others.

I often see this when managers launch a new signature campaign project or other paid project in market/services.
This is usually kept for important notifications for project members.

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/royse777-reputation-happy-moments-read-before-being-hard-on-low-rank-accounts-5295408 : I have to reserve spots. One to update my own lists and another to update with user given lists.
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/--5287061: To add anything new that would come from the discussion

These are some common practice for me when I have a reserved spot.

It is a placeholder. Some people will log updates or changes to the OP in that post, others will use it to archive or link to interesting posts that come up later in a topic. There can be a lot of reasons for doing it. I can't say why that particular user is doing it, though their reasoning could be buried under 3000 characters.
