The reasons are similar to why Greek's love their Prime Minister.
Standing up to the Rest of the World does make you a hero in your country.

That is only the partial answer. The rest of the world doesn't mean the United States and its European allies. It also includes neutral states such as China, India, Brazil, South Africa.etc.

To understand the situation in Russia, you have to carefully analyze the situation. You have to see who is the main rival of Putin inside Russia. His main rivals are oligarchs such as Mikhail Khodorkovsky. As far as the Russians are concerned, they have a choice of choosing between Putin, and the oligarchs. Obviously they chose the former.

China neutral? China OWNS the US, many parts of Africa and they keep going. Why? Oh America, you need more money because you spend too much on war? Sure, we'll lend it to you, i'm eager to see when they what happens when they want their money back. They are buying power.

Let's see. China population = near 1.5 billion. U.S. population = near 0.33 billion.

True ownership is based on strength. It isn't only formal strength, but it is also self-opposing strength (fear).

Each American will need to shoot almost 6 times, and hit their target fatally every time.

Only 1/6th of Chinese will need to hit their target fatally.

Of course, Chinese people have way less guns per person than Americans. This should prove interesting... to see who owns whom, that is.

Russians need a tzar, since they never had a true democracy they never learned to live in one.
And with the KGB / FSB ruling the country for the next decades, they may never learn democracy.

He is demonstrating strength to his people, that he would stand up for what is right (to their country) and not back down to foreign influence. This strongly stirs up the patriotic feeling of his people which is a really powerful thing.

I think the answer is obvious.
Russians are used to the size and strength of their country in the history and didn't easily accept the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the loss of their positions and power in the world.
Putin has renewed a global power and influence of Russia in the world and it seems that for the majority of Russians this is more important than their economy, daily life, living standards etc.
I think it is not easy to understand the mentality and mindset of the average Russian man and of course the absence of a strong opposition and a strong state propaganda makes a big role in creating the cult of Putin.

But in the past year, Putin's relationship with the West has deteriorated

Only the false western media and false/fake corrupt poiticians say this, even though I am a westerner, I can and millions of others can see through the fakeness of the West.

Do you not feel embarrassed, for all the lies that is put on Russia.
The biggest threat to Europe at this moment in time is the USA

And Ruskies are jealous that Russia is only the second biggest threat?
Amirite?

History will not smile kindly on the dangerous and counterproductive expansion of the USA/NATO.
Can you provide evidence that Russia is in any way similar with threats?

It is all propaganda back and forth. It's used to be a sort of in between media in West Europe but nowadays we are going after the US and UK propaganda (not Yo mention Russia and China). All countries have their dirty little secrets, but it's better for citizens to worry about the new McDonald's burger or Starbucks Coffee, instead of actual uncensored news.

Flip the question around to why Iran's president is supported or why ISIS is still going in Iraq, it's because of the western powers showing absolutely no restraint in their tactics and watching them use diplomacy is like seeing an arrogant parent lecture their children even though they know it's them not the child that's done wrong.

I'm not surprised in the slighest to see this happening, they just simply don't want an invasion, oh yeah and definitely fuck what any media outlet says about Russia, I'd much rather trust random posters on the internet, at least that way you get different perspectives instead of just propaganda.

You are basically correct. Putin is not universally loved (even though I personally respect him for archievements he made possible), not even by long shot. However, natives burned themselves enough times to prefer local leader to outside adventurers and crooks. Effective governance of countries, which span across continents would be impossible without strong, dedicated hand anyway.

The biggest threat to Europe at this moment in time is the USA

Agreed 100%.

Ever since the end of the World War II in 1945, the Americans have used the Europeans for their own benefits. Apart from turning most of the Western European nations as loyal vassal states of the United States, the Americans have also played a part in destroying the European economy. They have forced the European states to accept expensive American shipments in the place of cheap supplies from Russia (natural gas is the best example).
