Let the chips fall where they may.
Bitcoin's market cap is not 4.4 Trillion :X, it is 4.4 Billion which is alot less than the sum of the entire Video Game industry. Use this time before they understand to get well ahead of the plebeian minded fellow.

I just figured that out myself Tongue

I suppose I should go apologize to my brother now Smiley

It takes effort to learn how revolutionary Bitcoin really is. My room-mate does not want to take the time to read the white-paper.

My brother thinks Bitcoin is "useless". After asking which is more important: Games or Bitcoins, he answered "games". I then revealed that Bitcoin market cap (4.4 Trillion at this writing) exceeds the entire revenues of the world entertainment industry (2.8 Trillion in 2009).

Both my banker and sister classify Bitcoin as an investment, akin to the stock market. They see the volatility, but not necessarily the fundamental potential of the technology.

I also have an acquaintance that informed me they (as in the people in charge of it) "canceled" Bitcoin (this was in June or so). I resisted the urge to tell them they failed to tell me to shut down my node Tongue It appears people can't comprehend that it is decentralized.

The idea is amazing as is the technology. Why is there such a instant rejection of the idea? It can literally start arguments with what I see as intelligent people. I don't get it.....

it took awhile for people to adopt money over gold back in the day.  So its going to also be a challenge for btc. There is no reason over time btc can't have the same adoption. Especially as we are more and more digital everyday

if your having fights and arguments with family and friends over money.

then maybe its time you changed the subject, or atleast approached the topic from a different angle

Peoples are grown in centralized systems (political, monetary) so they are sceptical how can decentralized systems work. Even the regular torrent users dont need to understand the technology behind, or care how torrents really works.

It's normal thing really.
Every time when new, revolutionary idea, is introduced to the public, a lot opposition and skepticism show up.
People are used to do things in certain way and don't like to change and try something new, not proven.
When bitcoin become mainstream, this will change.

probably because to understand bitcoin one must first understand what monetary system we have today and how it came to be and why it doesn't work.
after that one must learn about the bitcoin technology, how it works, and why its not a scam but the best form of money ever made.

for most people it simply takes too much learning to really understand the fundamentals behind bitcoin and without that people just assume its another internet scam.

It's just something unknown and unfamiliar to people. So obviously new stuff scares some people.

My family just gives somewhat of a "whatever, Envrin" laugh, and thinks I'm doing something naughty.

That's their judgement, and they're sticking to it!  heh.

That is the same reaction I get, and there has never been any hint of controversy.  Sometimes we have a laugh about "worthless internet money."  But nobody in person has ever intimated to me that Bitcoin should not exist or people should not use it.

Education, most people can't comprehend the impacts of what Bitcoin has solved, possible applications etc.

Fact of the matter is it took nearly 1/4th of a year of next too constant research for me to feel comfortable with the majority of Bitcoin's ideas. After hearing about how Bitcoin works from people for nearly a year and a half I still am able too learn new things about the protocol.

The same argument that i would submit to myself when i first got into bitcoin. The problem is mainly not fully understand how the system works and immediately come to the conclusion that it will not work. Actually 2 among my circle of friends thinks that bitcoin is a scam and they are very reserved and immediately brush aside simple facts no matter what you tell them

That's exactly what I get too. "It's a scam". I asked our corporate IT guy about it when he was at my job . He said it was used for drugs through TOR. I feel like I can't even bring it up. Definitely not at work.

As I regard it, the main problem for people is to understand it properly. The instant rejection comes from the lack of knowledge.

But that won't imply for "all people" because I don't grasp this whole new revolutionary technological aspect, I get the idea and how it works but I have no clue how to code such a thing.

They've probably been watching too much television where they claim we're all terrorists, drug dealers and paedophiles >_>

That is also why it is controversy, propaganda....but that will change in time anyway.  Grin

If we think how Time works can we all agree that both Internet and Crypto is still in it's foster stage... Exciting times ahead.  Smiley

The same reason people instantly reject the idea of anarchism. In a word, indoctrination.

"The measure of the state’s success is that the word anarchy frightens people, while the word state does not. We are like those African slaves who believe that their master is their benefactor, or those Russians who still believe that Stalin was their guardian. "
-Joseph Sobran

"...Everything had to have its own nature and limitations, including the state; the idea of a state continually growing, knowing no boundaries, forever increasing its claims on the citizen, offended and frightened me. It could only end in tyranny."
-Joseph Sobran

"Nationalism is our form of incest, is our idolatry, is our insanity. "Patriotism” is its cult. It should hardly be necessary to say, that by "patriotism” I mean that attitude which puts the own nation above humanity, above the principles of truth and justice; not the loving interest in one’s own nation, which is the concern with the nation’s spiritual as much as with its material welfare — never with its power over other nations. Just as love for one individual which excludes the love for others is not love, love for one’s country which is not part of one’s love for humanity is not love, but idolatrous worship."
