The person is probably worth billions and doesn't want any unwanted attention from the criminal element.
I don't think he is hiding, he is dead. My take is that he, satoshi, was the late Hal Finney. At least Hal Finney knew more then he was willing to share. Why not tell? well sometimes you just move on, get other intreast and he did not want to deal with all the media fuzz.
There may be other reasons. What if bitcoins were created to create capital outflows from the American economy. Maybe bitcoin is an explosion that is planted under the country's economy. If so, I understand why the name of the creator of bitcoin is carefully kept.
Of course he is hiding, he is afraid the safety of his life, his family, and his relatives. Try to put on his shoes, you will fear for your life everyday because tons of people knows that you have billion of dollars in Bitcoin waiting to be spent. This is one of the reasons why the one who got rich by Bitcoin isn't telling anyone about it, they prefer to keep their mouth silent.
I did hear that the name Satoshi Nakamoto is a pseudo name and not necessarily a real person assumed to be really existing. I also believe the name was coined out to at least give credit to someone for the launch of this project! And on the other way round if he/she is really existing and hiding for reasons best known, thumbs up!

Knew this would happen. This was their intention all along. They want to hijack Blockchain/Bitcoin by all means. The real Satoshi whereabout is known by them. I think the reason is very simple.
It concerns the publicity and privacy.
In case Bitcoin will be a bubble, all the victimcs of it will accuse him. He thought over all the risks before taking the responsibility.

Probably been held (house arrest) against his wish, Quietly withdrew to avoid being harassed by security agents or he simply withdrew to keep his invention safe.

Lol, if his documents has been verified. He will not be own patent right for sure. Actually this is the reason you have why satoshi is not coming out to reserve the copyright or patent. After he comes out, his life also may be threten to reserve in the name of any whale. Until satoshi hides we all can be safe with the bitcoins we invested and saved in our wallet.
It seems to have two reasons which I think i.e. if he is that much known and rich to the world and is afraid of himself and his family and other is the legal and the illegal status of bitcoin (strictly my opinion)

I think Satoshi Nakamoto knows all about what is happening now to his invention, the bitcoin. He is hiding i think because he has a plan. Maybe he will do something big or maybe he is doing something. If im a man who invented something that worth so much money, i will not hide but i will remain humble and doesnt need any promotions because my life could be in danger. Satoshi Nakamoto and the things he did were all subject to so many speculations. But for me, the only one who can answer those questions would be the man himself. Unfortunately, he has no spokesperson who can clarify things for us. However, these things are not really that important. what is the most important thing is that he opened the Pandora box for cryptocurrency and the world especially that of online would never be the same. I don't care his motives for hiding or eventually disappearing.

Just simple.Satoshi has almost challenged the bankers all over the world and wall street big shots.Bitcoin has now become the worst nightmare for them.They would have not even imagined that such a thing like bitcoin would be created which would become a serious threat to their future business.Now,its quite clear that satoshi's life is in serious threat due to these people.That's why satoshi hided his identity.In fact,i would say that he has taken the best possible decision that even any body in his stage would take.

Do you understand what is cryptography? Does it make sense to you to see why Satoshi doesn't feel the need to show his face? To do what?
True cypherpunks, cryptographs, anarchists are not interested in money. Their freedom worth more than that.
Satoshi can get more problems that anything else and it doesn't worth the risk for him (and the whole family, considering Satoshi is an individual)

If I was Satoshi Nakamoto I would be super enthusastic about revealing my identity. Bitcoin is going to have a huge impact on the long term viability of the nation state if iti successful.
Satoshi is probably has own reasons why he/she/them left the scene. My opinion is that as bitcoin prices gradually rose upwards there is a craving among people to get more bitcoin so as to get rich. If this Satoshi was a known person and because his wallet has a huge number of bitcoin stored in it, he/she may have been a target to robbers. People are always trying to illegally earn bitcoins and they might have forced him to submit to their demands. Also there is also the legal responsibility that many government spies may try to attack him and extort information. I feel what he has done is correct - gave mankind a boon and left them to deal with it.

My theory would be that he's fearing for his life in the sense that someone would like to copy the algorithm that he used in Bitcoin. Or maybe he's afraid that someone gonna forced him to make a prototype of his cryptocurrency and order him to destroy Bitcoin in exchange of his life.
