I did not receive any email after reporting. But I am confused why this is happening in your case. Because I have never seen anyone face such a thing before. Have you enabled something in your account settings that allows the system to send you auto-emails? I am giving a screenshot to my Notifications and Email option. You can check to see if you have any additional options enabled

According to this staff, it was been removed in January 2018, but the administrators haven't adjust the descriptions.

I did a little search in the Staff section, and for the record the ability to send an email for each report was removed in January 2018.

So if you did a report in 2017 or earlier, it's possible that a mod has your email address somewhere. But if I believe this answer from a mod (I won't name him Smiley) following this change, you don't risk a lot :

I had a filter set up as well though I recently changed it to move all the messages to the trashcan. Guess that's no longer needed.

I saw an annoying spam and I wanted to use the report function and I was told that my email address will be revealed to the moderator when I report a spam. I was temporarily deterred. Am I going to be receiving emails from a moderator as a follow up for a report I made?
Moderators who are hired by forum admins and do their moderation jobs in the forum. You can believe that forum moderators are not PM spammers but if they spam you like this, you can report it to forum admins for escalating investigations. I am quite sure that you don't have to make your report to forum admins because the issue will very unlikely happen.

What's the essence of revealing my email?
I don't understand it too even after reading SMF User Help: Personal Messaging
Quote
Description

While email is a good way to correspond directly with members, it also has several drawbacks for forum purposes: you must open your email application to write and send the message, the recipient must open his/her email application and check his/her mail, your message will be mixed in with all the other mail and it can sometimes take several minutes to an hour for mail to reach the recipient.

As an alternative to email, SMF offers a faster, more private method. Personal messaging on the boards provides instantaneous delivery to the recipient's private mailbox. The mail is sent and received entirely through SMF, so neither you nor the recipient have to open another program or leave SMF. Personal messaging also offers both the sender and the recipient greater privacy because no-one's real email address is revealed. Personal messages show only the handle and name of both parties.

If a recipient isn't online, personal messages wait in the member's PM box until the next time he/she logs in and reads and/or deletes them. SMF Personal Messages is a self-contained, highly private email system.

Go on and make the report, if you care so much about your privacy, you can use a throw-away email for the forum (email not associated to your work or personal information).

I was temporarily deterred.
I think this is the main reason of revealing emails so that only valid forum users will be reporting. Without email collection, there could be frivolous reports or even a bot attack on the reporting system in order to mare it.

Am I going to be receiving emails from a moderator as a follow up for a report I made?
No, according to Charles-Tim. Moderators don't have such a time to be sending you emails.

What's the essence of revealing my email?
If there's any other reasons, a moderator can help us.

No, you are not. There is no mentioned that you will receive an email from them, isn't it? You will be PM'ed maybe.

I think the report system should be simple and if possible automated in order not to discourage anyone from reporting obvious spams. What's the essence of revealing my email?
All report system required the reporter to know who are they, it's simple. The current report system never discourage users to report, there are already ten of thousands reports came from a single user, and thousands from others.

Am I going to be receiving emails from a moderator as a follow up for a report I made?
I have reported more than 3500 posts but I have not received any message from moderators before regarding the reported post or posts.

The report systems is very simple. But it can not be automated because moderators will have to read your report and also go through the reported post to know if the report is good or not.

What's the essence of revealing my email?
This should not be a problem. You can open a new email and use it on this forum.
