So what AV you guys can recommend? Better if its free, don't want to go premium.
I just use it for scanning flash drive, not for internet surfing so I think even a free one can work.

You must have basic knowledge of using a computer and browsing the internet, If you do not know how to use them like crazy then any kind of problem can happen at any time, It depends on your usage How do you use it, An antivirus will not have to solve all your problems, And none of the software in the world has yet to make any problem that will solve all the problems, A program can only help you, it can not do all your work, An antivirus and the right ones will some help you.
That is what I am trying to point out. Every now and then a user will somehow let a malicious software be allowed to be installed in their pcs letting it be undetected to their computers. I know this personally even if my anti-virus and anti-spyware softwares run on a regular automatic scan some of them are still left when you do manual scanning and then you will realize that most of them are something you have downloaded by yourself. After that day I realize that I need to be careful on what I download or click when I am surfing the web.

Having an installed antivirus on a computer is a good solution, but if the user does not know the basics of security on the Internet, then the antivirus may not be a panacea.
If you can want use any antivirus you can try full package or full version with 'Internet security facilities' antivirus,So I thing solved maximum security problem, but it is depend your antivirus company.
Even that wouldn't work, every time a anti-virus would detect something the user still has the authority to give permissions. For example a website is blocked by your anti-virus users could still give exceptions to still continue visit the website and maybe download a malicious software. At the end users are still at fault as they risk themselves on allowing exceptions. Still users need to have proper internet knowledge when it comes to scams, phishing, and malicious softwares as even anti-virus does not guarantee your computer's protection from your own wrongdoing.

I do not use an antivirus, I think it uses a lot of RAM
LoL Cheesy are you using 2GB RAM on your PC/Laptop? If so you should know that now the maximum programme installed or using the requirement of 4GB RAM minimum. If you want to use windows latest version so need minimum 4GB RAM otherwise your PC/laptop will not work properly.

Bitcoin FTW!
AVs also have plenty of false positives with intentionally installed programs that are legitimate like various software altcoin miners like BFGminer and such (though these are detected as malware as coin miners are sometimes embedded as malware into certain programs). I personally do not use antivirus on my main computer, though I also don't download any ol' link I see on the internet.

As for keeping your account safe, do not access your account on an untrusted or unsecured computer or network. There's a number of people on this forum that have multiple accounts for posting and viewing the forums on unsecured computers. Nothing wrong with that at all.

See here for independent evaluations of many commonly used anti-virus programs: https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/

Even Windows Defender isn't bad these days provide you aren't an idiot. The best anti-virus is common sense. Don't visit any suspicious links, and don't download anything without verifying/scanning it first. There are plenty of sites which will scan an online file before you download it. Don't give away your email to anyone and everyone to flood with malicious attachments and links, and definitely don't go downloading random altcoin/token wallets.

Just a note of caution here - Two anti-virus programmes running in the same computer can be worse than one, and can leave you partly unprotected. If they both fight for control of the interrupt handler for example, you could end up with the interrupts being sent to the wrong handler routines.
What on in a case a system has a default antivirus and you install a  new antivirus because you are jot satisfied with the service you get from the former would it also affect the system?

What I dislike the most about antivirus is that the regular Joe always thinks he is 100% safe and vaccinated against malware because he's using one. But all most of them do is check for known virus signatures. And most of the time that's not enough; and even if it is, it's only to help you against trojans and etc. If you download a fake wallet, for example, the fake Electrum wallet propagated through the fake update messages, an antivirus will not detect it, simply because it can't know what is malicious or not. I myself never use any antivirus.

You can read many benefits By using an antivirus, click the image and read more.
Anti-virus software will not help you in the case of random browsing "clicking on any link" because scams are renewed faster than the antivirus software database.
So it 's better to avoid downloading any program and clicking on random links.

Don’t use this forum, don’t download movies, torrents, open emails with a PC/Laptop that you use for crypto.

Or modify the HOST file on your computer to prevent visiting any site other than specific sites you trust.

Agree. Antiviruses don't work against ransomware and scams. In the end, it's simply being vigilant.

As we know viruses were invented by antivirus companies to make money. But, now the viruses are used by hackers to steal the money, and antiviruses are so weak about it. Do not trust antiviruses compeletely, pay attention to your own dangerlessness.

just install Linux, it should give you basic protection from virus and stuff like that. on top of that, i think having firewall is great too. as long as user can use it, firewall is enough to protect them from malicious attack.

To understand if you need an antivirus, first you need to understand how it works.
an antivirus has a list of signatures and is basically based on that to understand what happens. with new viruses is not effective..
And with mac os and linux you dont need it

I’ve always been careful on the internet. Don’t use a PC/Laptop that you use for crypto to do general browsing. It really is that simple.

Don’t use this forum, don’t download movies, torrents, open emails with a PC/Laptop that you use for crypto.

You should move your topic to the "off-topic" section. This doesn't belong to Meta. And to be honest, I do not think belongs to this forum. Is just a link to another website. If you really want to write about the qualities in using an anti-virus, just write.

Yeah, good advice about security but I don't know how your topic belongs to Meta section. Meta is mainly about the forum, better move it to a more appropriate place like Service discussion or Beginners and Help
