Looking forward exactly 2 years into the future,

Yes! It will be and they will go on to set world records! Except its called XPM today.

Even within a matter of months after this original post, XPM had already found 13 new prime numbers:

No, it will not die, ever.... Unless we find out that there is an end prime, a prime with no larger prime. If such a thing even exists it could take ~100,000 years of technological advancement .

It's easily provable that there is no largest prime, and besides, Primecoin isn't trying to search for the largest prime. It searches for large prime chains.

There are so many alt coins out there. Primecoin seems solid to me, but will it last?

What makes it stand apart (if anything) that will survive the test of time?

Or do you think it will just die out like so many other alt coins?

Very solid, it will last

It stands apart because of its amazing contribution to science ( see primecoin record books), its already made history. That is the true test of time.

Research coins are the next bitcoin. BTC was worth 3 cents for a while... XPM, jumped to almost 2 $. holding somewhat steady at about 50 cents each... compare that to the birth of bitcoin and its relative worth.

+1 Primecoin   ( i wish i had a large prime number of prime coins )

I believe it will last a long time, just like PPC. It has wealthy supporters.

It's the first altcoin that is using the hashing power to calculate something useful. And it's still the only one that does this. Primes are (like already said) very important in cryptography and of course can be useful in other areas as-well. People like the idea of using the hashing power to create something useful. I'm not an expert on prime calculation but the used ways to calculate primes seems to be 3 of the few to go at least for now. There will likely be hard-forks necessary as soon as newer and better prime calculation methods come along and make the used obsolete. That isn't a big problem with an active community behind it and will not have to be done often if even once. Sooner or later the development of ASIC's will be worth it and calculating primes will get to the next level. I think XPM will stand around for a long time and will very likely increase in value over time (not necessarily according to BTC but for sure in relation to the USD).

My current full list of preferred cryptocoins: 1. BTC, 2. LTC, 3. XPM

It needs retail acceptance and businesses that will accept it as a currency.

DailyBit.net is now accepting Primecoin as a payment method. Cheesy

I think Primecoin has a good chance if more merchants start taking it as payment.

A have been looking for a simple way to take Primecoins as payments. However as it is now there is no easy way for me to stick a plugin or Primecoin payment system on my web stores.

I have thought about paying for development of such a system.

At this time I am not willing to invest a few thousand dollars needed to implement it. Hopefully someone with more practical experience will come up with a solution.
This is an interesting point. All altcoins need this actually.

Someone should make a "bitpay" type service that allows payment in MANY altcoins, so that they become all accepted by merchants. This would really help the cryptocurrency economy as a whole.

Each different altcoin could be thought of as different types of coins.. in USD we have quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies. In crypto, we have bitcoin, litecoin, feathercoin, primecoin, etc.  (although I'm aware that bitcoin can be nearly infinitely divided so this example isn't exactly the same, since bitcoin can be dollars, quarters, pennies, all at the same time)

It needs a gpu miner to encourage broader adoption among BTC miners who are squeezed out by ASICs.  It needs retail acceptance and businesses that will accept it as a currency.

What makes it better than, say, feathercoin?

It's marginally less wasteful, as some people are interested in it's output.  Nothing else.

In fact, feathercoin has some services and infrastructure, and as part of UNOCS it "may" have a better future than prime coin IMO.

Not that I'm a huge feathercoin fan but, since you picked that as your example...

there are many reasons that it will last a very long time!
Thanks, I've actually been following that thread for a while now. I was more interested in peoples' ideas on how long it will be around and why. I'm glad you think it will be!
