EMA is the correct way to do it. But keeping their formula secret gives them a way to tweak it for whatever reason.
That attitude is a big red flag for me. There is no such thing as good faith when too much power is involved.
That's why we trust opensource code and formulas that are written on the wall for anyone to see. That's why we trust math vs central banks in the first place.

So beware of the Winkdex.

With no altcoins listed I can't see it being much use over BitcoinWisdom, Coinmarketcap and/or TargetMoon.

I don't know if it's intentional, but the "about" section is mildly amusing...

That was too funny. My first thought: Those dudes are SCARY identical! I wonder if they got the same grades as well!

But  really they should've called it the 'Winkledex'.

Can someone explain in simple terms how Winkdex works and how is this price quoted?

(Bitstamp + BTC-e) / 2

* I have a patent and trademark pending on this highly complex equation; you must pay me for looking at it  Grin

No. That's wrong.

If you don't know, perhaps you shouldn't post BS. Putting a smiley in your brag won't stop some people from actually believing that crap.

It's based on the top 3 qualified USD exchanges, not just Stamp and BTC-e and is not a simple average, but a weighted moving exponential average.

I quoted this directly from their website twice already. I'll try a third time.

Winkdex is calculated by blending the trading prices in U.S. dollars for the top three (by volume) qualified Bitcoin Exchanges during the previous two hour period using a volume-weighted exponential moving average.

the index has a hidden weakness in not referencing Huobi or OkCoin.

I think they mean the top three (by volume) qualified Bitcoin Exchanges using USD. Isn't Huobi JPN only?

At least they are using a volume-weighted exponential moving average.

Looks like they split the difference between Bitstamp and BtC E.

Glad they patented that.

*On a serious note this is the right decision.  The media needs to be weaned off quoting Gox and this is how to achieve it.

Not a bad day to come out with it.  We are pretty undervalued with the Gox issues I believe.  It might spur some interest if people look at it in a day or two and see the price increase by $100 or more.   Grin  I know I am bullish here but it could happen.  Anything can happen with Bitcoin I believe.

lol  Cheesy  There is only one word different in their profiles...their first name...why would they even put that on there like that, isn't it embarrassing?

They're probably proud of it.   Roll Eyes

I like that Gox prices are not factored in.

Absolutely. To include them would be a travesty.

As they describe it:

Quote
Winkdex is calculated by blending the trading prices in U.S. dollars for the top three (by volume) qualified Bitcoin Exchanges* during the previous two hour period using a volume-weighted exponential moving average.

* As of February 7, 2014, Mt.Gox placed a "pause on all BTC withdrawal requests” in addition to a continued "back-log of [USD] withdrawals”. As a result, it is no longer a qualified exchange for the Winkdex calculation.

I'm not the biggest Winklevoss fan but they seem to have gotten this one right.

Interesting....

Wonder if the community will except this new index as the "defacto" over other pricing sites.  Also curious why they felt the need to create a new pricing index.

I assume because their ETF will need a price index. Might as well create their own than trusting someone elses.

Don't know but I like that Gox prices are not factored in.

So they say. But still their average is lower than BitcoinAverage. I wonder why they have to keep their formula a secret?
