I'm sorry for your loss. To recover a wallet, you need either the .keys file and password, or mnemonic seed.
What's intriguing is that you saw a balance in your local GUI wallet. So you had the .keys file on your drive at some point. What happened after that, do you remember doing a cleanup of that folder (Documents\Monero\wallets)?
