If you're serious about funding a new server I think I can get the highest performance required of a new server without the need for backups and remote servers that were adding substantial cost for quite an affordable price. I think it would be smart to move to such a server as it would offer slight but demonstrable performance advantages. Backups no longer mean anything with solo since logs are only of historical interest rather than having any effect on future block solves and payouts. In the event of a hardware failure the pool would have no backup but that makes no difference to the reinstatement of another solo pool from scratch. So taking that in consideration, the best value highest performing pool (in the areas that matter) would cost $98 USD setup fee and $112 / mo. That's only $770 USD for 6 months - the older hardware setup with multiple sites and backups cost a lot more than this. The only caveat is that the provider only has one available in Vint Hill in the United states or Hillsboro. I believe the Vint Hill location is a better one as it is well connected from all locations in the USA. I don't have a firm idea of how many blocks the pool will solve and what would be a worthwhile fee at this stage for my personal time, but I don't have a problem with leaving it at 2% to begin with since the pool basically runs itself once it's up and going and needs very little maintenance.

I have no stake in the escrow funds in case of emergency, and in fact would prefer if this was managed completely separately from me, and treat it as a kind of insurance, but it may not be required at all if people are willing to bear the risk. I don't want people to think they'll be paid for orphans or stales.

I agree except for the part about compensating bad blocks.  The two alternatives are mine at another solo pool which will have similar issues, or run a solo node yourself which probably has less connectivity and the same if not more issues with block propagation.  Your risk =(chance of miner returning blocksolving share x chance it gets propagated to the network).  Your own node will probably mess this up more than a server like ckpool.  Nobody worries about compensation then.  I agree with the car park analogy and hey, some of them even have fees.

'The right to privacy matters'
why not do a few things.

here is a list

up grade server
pay for six months up front.
give the poor guy who got fucked some more coin as it could have been anyone of us. say 0.125 btc
give ck some coin for running it the next six months

create a fuck up escrow fund it case a fuck up happens. say 0.125

determine what the list above costs.
determine if the list i made makes sense.

we just spent  multiple btc since jan. more then three or four btc.
using nice hash to rent.
and nicehash makes money 💰 not the miners or ck.

what could the list above cost?

we could review this in six months. see if it is a good idea.

I am down for  0.02  in addition to the 0.01 i gave in.

my expertise is not server companies. but i am good at getting shit done.
i am a fair minded guy. and i have an honest reputation.

years ago i was able to help with a missed block here along with another member.

Alright, well the fee doesn't seem to be a problem. Would people be satisfied with it being advertised as "Not for profit pool, all mining is at miners risk." Just like a car park, all care, no responsibility blah blah.

From what I understood, you do want to keep the pool but you don't want to be held responsible if and when something goes wrong, I won't speak for others, but out of the few pools that offer solo mining, who would compensate a "missed block" worth over 100k? I am sure that no pool will do that.

So what is your responsibility and obligations? get a decent server, make sure everything looks technically correct, remove everything that is not important, Segwit, extra servers locations and etc, anything that might cause an issue should be removed, and that's where your duty stops, anything happens beyond that is merely bad luck, add a notification saying that "Due to many reasons, sometimes you may submit a valid block and the pool misses it, mine at your own risk", problem solved.

If I go to another pool, I won't trust them that they will do their best to avoid mistakes, I know you will, so mistakes do happen, I rather face mistakes with someone whom I know that will try his best to minimize them.

As for the fees, the first thing you should do IMO is getting the total cost per year for a server that will be MORE than enough to handle the pool operations, tell us about it, let's see if the community can fund it, as for your efforts and time, start 5% fees for your own efforts so that if blocks are found you get paid nicely, if not then you lost efforts, in other words, you did mine with your efforts instead of hashrate!( makes sense?), I don't think anyone will mind a 5% when they hit a BITCOIN block.

Agree and support this 100%

I willing donate to the new CKSOLO server.
Once we get everything hashed out...  Smiley

I can also run a server from my office.
Maybe if a spare is needed, located in the Northeast of the US.
I would cover the electrical costs for it.

Just a thought
The connectivity a good pool needs is probably beyond what your office offers ^_^

Yes I'd like to upgrade the server. Where in the US is best?

For a single US location Dallas, TX is probably best.
Which is where the current pool server is.

I really don’t know, I’m far far away from us.
Philipma should know, he will tell us, once he gets here.

Hi,

I like this pool and spare to mine with my tiny machine once a week for a refreshment.
And personally, i don't even mind to pay 5% fee when needed.
I hope i can donate more in any kind of resources that i have to make this pool alive 'n kickin'  Wink

Thanks & good luck for all.

Yeah absolutely.
But still, lets make a server upgrade, if its old... to minimise the chances of a failure.

Someone might be able to donate the required resources.

Can you give us an idea about server hardware and bandwidth requirements to have something reliable?

I honestly don't think the fee is a problem for most
If anything I would be willing to move to 3 ~ 4% if it helped with quality of service from your standpoint, better hardware redundancy, etc
Anything else may over-complicate and drive miners away
My prof always stressed KISS in design work (no insult intended)

1. I think you should keep the fee.
2. Yes, this sounds about right.
3. Maybe, but if you keep the fees, is it needed?
4. Absolutely. + we will keep donating, once we find those blocks.
5. Profit)
6. Lets upgrade you're server, to the best available hardware, theres absolutely no reason for you to spend your money on this hardware, lets use the best cpu, and a really fast ssd, for swap files and etc.

7.Im ready to donate, who's ready to donate, just send a message here..
If I keep the fee, it no longer is really a not-for-profit pool and with it comes the onus of being paid by it.

I've thought of a potential solution that involves moving to a completely different model for running the pool.

1. The pool becomes fee free.
2. The pool is now advertised as a 'not for profit" service and mining is "at own risk"
3. A fund is set up to pay for server fees
4. Donations to the maintainer (me) separately for my time and effort are completely voluntary.
5. Profit

If the server fee fund ever dries up the pool closes. If something goes wrong, bad luck.

Thoughts?

Should I just tell them "bad luck shit happens" and join the reputation of the big pools?

Yes.  Anyone who thinks there will never be a software glitch has unrealistic expectations.
