It's finally cooled off here to the point I need to heat my house, so I fired up my A6 last night for the first time since last spring and have my hat back in the solo lottery.  Wish I could afford/justify an A7 to play with, but my A6 is still a good piece of gear.  Wish I had a 240v outlet at my new house, it was a bit more efficient running off that than it is at 120v now.

Thanks for your show of support, much appreciated.

The show of support is the thing that keeps me going and at least at this stage I won't be throwing the towel in.

I've been working on the code trying to figure out what went wrong and I believe I have it nailed now but I'm too scared to deploy it again just yet.

Instead I've put up a separate pool instance for people brave enough to test it that would prefer to help signal support for segwit for the time being. This will be temporary and comes without any guarantee, even though I've since confirmed I found the bug with the previous code. I'd appreciate it some are brave enough to mine on it instead of the current pool as a show of support. I'm pretty sure you will end up with a block if you find one.

Pool is at
stratum+tcp://solo.ckpool.org:13333

Stats at pool2 version of regular pool
http://solo.ckpool.org/pool2
http://solo.ckpool.org/users2/
http://solo.ckpool.org/workers2/

It is on the same server as the existing solo pool so comes with all the same performance and benefits.

Thanks for the test pool -ck
put around 20th

if i hit it, ill donate a little extra for the cause.  Wink

Thanks guys. The test pool is at a rip roaring 1.8% diff so it'll find a block in no time.

hi ck -- just wondering, if segwit adoption 95% is not reached -- does that mean we go back to old solo pool? Thanks

No as the update is (supposed to) work on both networks regardless, and there are other updates to the pool as well which were pending. When the test pool finds a block, I'll be moving back to the one pool again with the updated code, and just get all miners back on the one main pool through a series of seamless redirects the way I usually do, and simply leave that port open on the new pool as well as the existing port.

At this stage if I were to make a call, it's my guess that there will be a significant proportion of the network, maybe 15% that will persist with something like BU or just core pre-segwit, while there is a large chunk of mining entities that are currently neutral. I expect the neutral entities will simply switch with time when it's convenient to avoid fucking up the way I did with the pool. The remainder is the real issue, but with one year for segwit to activate I still expect they'll eventually come around. They've signalled support for all sorts of other things in the past and eventually abandoned them. A lot of the concerns regarding segwit, I believe, are a combination of minor valid concerns, perceived major concerns, and plain FUD, and I don't believe the minor valid concerns outweigh the benefits segwit brings to bitcoin at large.

And I'd just like to take this opportunity to bring up fucking up with the pool again. Even though it's out of character for me, I'd like to remind people of the slush incident - his pool had block withholding from a mining entity that likely lost the pool somewhere in the order of 250-500BTC depending on real luck over the course of about 3 months and that money was never reimbursed to the miners even though he allegedly found the offenders. Not sure what he ever did with the offenders but he certainly didn't treat that incident the way I did out of my own personal reserves of cash.

Software testing pays my bills so I'll throw my paltry 17.8 GH/s up on the test instance to help out.

The first failed submit block finder has been found and I would like to post the information here so there is a record of his block find for others to validate his claim to a reward and get his acknowledgement that he is satisfied.

The username and associated best ever share address was:
http://solo.ckpool.org/users/1MVshzPJjto9hb2g4WXAsxh1a7772Tkt8f

I have offered a reward of 12.5BTC - 1% being the nominal block find reward minus the regular 1% fee coming to 12.375BTC

Thank you for your integrity. I'm going to solo mine to your pool address, which port would you prefer me to use?
3333 or 13333?

Edit: I am the owner of that address and am happy with your offer as resolution.

I wish I could be like herb and say forget about it, unfortunately although I've found over 25 blocks since I've started I'm still down over 60k due to bad personal luck.

This last block cost me over 40 coins since the last one I found a couple weeks ago and I was down to my last coin after money used from refinancing my home. Guess it's time to thank you again for your honesty and integrity.

Yeah i just solo mine as a small lottery ;-)

Quote for the record. Give me some time to get the money out of cold storage and I'll post a transaction ID once I've sent it.

I was hoping I would be one of the unlucky winner. I would have not ask anything from you.
Thanks Herb, that would have been an extremely generous offer. I would have at least paid you 100% pps back for the mining shares you'd have done so it cost you nothing.

The life of a coder ins't always a simple one. I also do mistake which normally doesn't cost much to my company but there is always one error that will tears us down even if we did all we could to avoid the situation.

I was hoping I would be one of the unlucky winner. I would have not ask anything from you.

Keep calm and code on !

I'd prefer you to use the 13333 port for now since that is testing the new code. However as I stated at the time, I make no guarantees regarding the service on that port so will not be doing the same should a problem arise with block submission on that test server, but I'm fairly confident there should be no problem this time. If that lack of guarantee is an issue then please mine on the regular port instead.
