Hello all, I found a way to operate 7 gpus with the z87-g45 motherboard. It’s tricky but here’s what I did.

Before proceeding begin with only 1 video card installed in system.

1- set pcie to gen 1 for all PEG in bios
2- first enable igp (integrated onboard gpu)  shutdown then plugin your hdmi in the board’s hdmi slot
3- turn on pc and login to windows.
4- the trick is for windows to add gpus one by one and associate the pcie slot for each gpu. Therefore, shut down pc again, install another gpu in a pcie slot and boot up, once in windows confirm it was plugged in device manager then shutdown again.
5- once you get to the 7th gpu you’ll notice that it will not work and your screen will become all colorful at boot up and it will not load to windows.
6- shutdown and then unplug 7th gpu.

*HERES THE IMPORTANT STEP*
7- disconnect just 1 video card completely from any slot except for the 7th slot. Then plug in the 7th gpu (the one that didnt work earlier. Then boot into windows let it recognize the card and then shutdown.

8- now in the bios you need to switch from IGP to PEG. This will disable the onboard graphic. Save and reboot. Allow the system to enter windows without anything displaying on your screen (because your hdmi is still plugged in the onboard hdmi slot. Afterwards press the power button once so it shuts down the system correctly. Once ur system is turned off, remove the hdmi cable and you will need to plug the hdmi into a gpu (preferrably not one which is in the main x16 slot because it will automatically enable crossfire and you will not be able to disable crossfire as it will crash the system everytime. Only work around is to connect the hdmi to a gpu which is not in a full slot...connect it to a gpu which is in a 1x slot.

*IMPORTANT* do not turn on PC just yet, now plug in and connect the initial gpu that we removed from step 7 so now we should have all 7 gpus plugged in into their associated slots and windows is already familiar with each one and their slots

BOOM VOILA, 7 gpus all operating on the z87-g45 motherboard

That jumper is to force the GPU and the motherboard into 1x mode. If you have a full 1x to 16x adapter, it "should" have this built in.

Also, whether this works, can at times depend on the GPU, and not just the type, but the particular implementation of the PCB by the manufacturers.

First post - forced to share it here.

For those that have asked the question about the Z87-G45 board in other topics, I hope a forum search leads you here.

I've had one hell of a time like you to get this going, so if it works for you, and you're happy, feel free to tip 13KPB3KqfHUSYVhBBSs47sLZdM9NTcJgBp

What you need to do is:

1) In BIOS, set PEG 1-3 to Gen2 - It's under Advanced then PCI

2) Install into all slots except for slot 4.

3) Use a wire to short the pins on Slot7 like this.

So that it all looks like this.

4) Use this... DDU Removal whilst in safe mode, to uninstall all the drivers you've installed so far.  http://www.guru3d.com/files_details/display_driver_uninstaller_download.html

5) Reinstall on reboot, this new working driver. https://www.dropbox.com/s/vnemo9n1vmyr812/AMD%20Catalyst%2013.1%20WHQL.rar

Could someone elaborate a bit more on the "paperclip" thing? Sounds like a shorting thing of some kind, but I haven't heard of it til this thread...

I've read that you should use one power supply for the motherboard, hdd, and the risers (and how ever many cards you can run within the wattage) The second power supply should only power cards and nothing else (just use pcie cables and the motherboard cable, paperclipped or otherwise).  I thought I had that bookmarked but I can't find it.  I'm pretty sure it was on reddit so you can search there.  Anyway that's how I have my setup working, but I don't use a paperclip, I bought an adapter.  So take that for what it's worth but I'd still research more.

hey there.

We are trying to get 5 cards working on this motherboard.

But we  dont have a very powerful PSU, so we used 2 PSUs and connected them using the paperclip trick.

Should we use one PSU for only the molex risers for the GPUs? or does it matter at all which PSU is powering which parts?

What the optimal PSU setup if we have one 1250W and one 860W PSU?

for 4 GPU's or more you need the 13.1 TP driver.

Otherwise you can use latest if you wish.

Hi.

Do I have to use Your drivers or can I install new 14.1 for r9 290 ?
Do I have to use 1x risers only or can I use 16x as one of them?

Thank You.
Best Regards.

Just for the record, my suspicions were correct.  If you're not shorting slot 7 correctly and you have 6 GPUs plugged in your mobo will not post.  Use ethernet cable strands to short it using the method above.

I have 5 GPUs working with this board, but can't seem to get the 6th to work.  The motherboard won't post.  I don't think I'm shorting the 7th slot correctly...did your motherboard not post when you weren't shorting the slot?  I'm going to attempt to try it again tomorrow.  All on powered 1x risers btw.

Is this supposed to work on a 'MSI Z87-G45 Gaming' (Version E7821IMS v1.6)?

I can get myself the mobo to recognise max 5 cards, so I followed your guide.

In my case inside the PCI settings pegs are labelled from 0, i.e

PEG0
PEG1
PEG2

I set them all to GEN2.

I also used a wire to connect those pins as in the example screenshot on slot 7.

Unfortunately I am only seeing 4 cards in BIOS eventhough 6 are connected. (slot 4 I left empty as adviced)

Thanks

What risers are you using?

if all powered 1x, then slot7 shorting will work fine.
