Yes the location matters, the latency should not be too high.

see ya in 3 hrs ...You got this right, I've recently been in on the RubyCoin and BlackCoin launches and no matter how well they've done things people are whining and crying days into it. It's all an attempt to FUD the miners into selling cheap and to abandon mining so it's easier mining for those that remain. Be ready for it when it comes, it gets very old, like a broken record as they tell us how they're just trying to look out for our welfare with this $%(*&@ coin.

There was one listed a couple pages back but I am not familiar with them.
https://zeit.poolers.org is in Texas but is not P2Pool.

I'de be more concerned about DoS attacks, they seem to plague big launches.
