Decent is not a "token", Alax is. It's a token on the Dcore. Maybe you need to study this a little bit more if you don't understand the basic concept of this.
So why does decent need tokens at all? If Alax is using their own, and other projects will use their own?
DCT is used for transaction fees on the blockchain, similar to how ETH is used for gas. Any feature that requires a fee on the blockchain requires DCT. Any project can build on DCore and use DCT as their coin, or create a token.
Thank you, i was sleeping so you were faster. Tokens are just a part of cryptocurrencies ecosystem, they are not cryptocurrencies by themselves.
To the question, "why does decent needs tokens at all?". It doesn't "need" them, it's a platform and provides the possibility to run on it, and some projects need a platform.
Same could be asked on why does the eth, neo or any cryptocurrency has tokens. Because people want to run their service on those platforms.
A cryptocurrency is self-sufficient, not relying on any other cryptocurrency to function (not including merged mining), and requiring its own software.
A token works like a cryptocurrency at a high level, but relies on some other cryptocurrency's infrastructure in order to function, and often (but not necessarily always) lacks its own software.
