I apologize in advance if this topic has already been discussed.

Recently, I began to wonder why not make a hyperlink under the avatar? Everyone has the option to insert a hyperlink in their signature or profile, so why not do something similar under the avatar as well?

This could be a hyperlink for internal forum projects. After all, many users who wear an advertising signature have their own projects. This hyperlink under the avatar could be used to advertise your project (the link will lead to an ANN topic), a third-party thread that the user supports most often, an event on the forum, be it an auction, a drawing of a collectible, a lottery, a giveaway, or the same provision of some services (again with a link to the ANN topic).

All this can be implemented at the moment in the profile, in the Website tab, but it will look much more effective under the avatar.

I wonder if there is such a possibility to implement such a hyperlink? Or maybe theymos have already commented on a similar request? It would be interesting to get acquainted. Thanks.

I like this idea as a replacement for signatures.  I'm not sure about in addition to...  One can only have so much advertising constantly bombarding them.  As a replacement though, I think it's a great idea.  Besides removing the endless duplicated signatures we've all either hidden or grown accustomed to ignoring, it would also be a step towards bringing advertising in-house, as I believe it would be easier for the forum to manage user displayed advertisements with this setup.  It would also be a boon to bitcointalk forum projects, which is badly needed.

You can expect that this feature is probably too insignificant for the annoyance of modifying base-SMF. theymos often simply shrugs off feature creep: this idea, much like many others, is most likely due for Metabandonment. (until months later when the same topic appears over multiple threads)

1. If this proposed personal hyperlink will be embedded in the avatar image, I believe it will be in competition with the signature one is promoting.

This is about the text under the avatar, not about embedding the link into the avatar itself. These are two different things.
Noted! I have gotten the clear message. I thought you were saying about embedding a link in the avatar image.
If it is about the text under the avatar it's cool. However, it's like Theymos is unwilling to incorporate anything about links in the current software. The reason could be that the new software is fast approaching.
But, in order to avoid abuse, he could make it such that a certain token and privilege be attached to it such as copper membership.

Limiting it to the ranking of the users here should do the trick to prevent some of the possible scams. Possibly with merit requirement to make sure that the user is active and participating in the forum. I'm thinking of the problems like misclicks towards the link and could contain malicious contents or something.
OP talks about in-forum links only wherein no links that would redirect outside the forum, so there is no possibility that people would just be able to insert links that have malicious content into it, unless it redirects the user to a thread here that contains that link to a malicious website.

I got a bad feeling that some users would sneakily promote scam project/s in there.
Already, there are various other links that are being used for scam activities. We shouldn't make it look like scam will begin because a link in enabled on the avatar space. There are always two options to things – good or evil. People are either good or evil. Projects are either genuine or fake. That's the way things are. On my part, I will suggest that theymos enables links on the avatar space for certain ranks. The link should be one promoting the social media sites by users of companies whose signature logos they're wearing.

It is a good idea, but I think there will be some controversies.
1. If this proposed personal hyperlink will be embedded in the avatar image, I believe it will be in competition with the signature one is promoting.
2. If one is promoting a particular project, and still parade a separate link that leads outside the forum, if the consequences is scam. I think the reputation of the company you wear her signature would be affected.
3. If the avatar is made clickable, I think the signature will propose to have it aswell.
4. If the Promoter of a campaign has a personal project, using the personal text box to link to your profile website could serve the purpose.

I can be (ab)use for scam.

If desired, anything can be used for scam, but this is not a reason to refuse it.

True. I have seen even Trust feedback to be used for spamming.

That would make the profile more commercial, wouldn’t it?

After adding the ability to use a hyperlink in the profile, did this make the profiles more commercial? I do not think so.
Profile website isn't much noticeable when you make a post. It only shows the web logo which refers to nothing. Barely people will notice that it's clickable unless they visit your profile. On the other hand, when the personal text will be clickable, bounty campaign/signature campaign will have the requirement to use that place as well (still lots of campaign require you to put personal text) & when it will be clickable, it will be MUST for participating in the campaign. The place won't anymore be your personal; instead it will be owned by the project you will promote. There will be few exception though; you know better as you are in CM.

It's a nice idea, but only if the link is not outside the forum. Otherwise, it'll just be another attempt to make the forum a better place which will be then abused by bounty hunters.
Yes, that's why I focused on internal links, without any links to third-party websites.
Abuse become more likely even if you really want the feature to not load third party website that have nothing to do with the campaign or signature used. It seem that these request are increasingly being ignored by theymos as potential abuse become more frequent by users who no longer think about the reputation of their account. A suggestion that might be implemented is that the campaign owner should include a link to ann the project or site being advertised in the signature code used by the participant. I quite rarely find signature sets that have a hyperlink to their ann thread now.

All other links allowed in a user's profile can lead to outside the forum. I don't see why an avatar link shouldn't be able to lead to an outside link.
True. Well, it'll just make things worse then.
All other links on a user's profile at least have the ability to have a description of the link. If you have a website link in your profile, you must have a website title, and any link in your signature must either be a "raw" link or have some kind of text if using the url= bb code.

If your avatar contains a link, there would not be any text, only an image.

Also, the forum has been hacked via the avatar system before, so I doubt that theymos is exactly eager to be making changes to the avatar system.

Anyone can also add a short link to their personal text. It would not be clickable, however it would be nearly as good as a clickable avatar.

I can be (ab)use for scam. Hyperlinks in profile page (website) will require more clicks and more time so it can have less compromising effects.

A more important reason
  • Character limits in personal text. It is almost impossible to include hyperlink in personal text (BBcode + description of a hyperlink). That will be too long and exceeds the limit

Good question, but honestly it doesn't bring much attention, besides the potential for boosting link juice without the possibility of any interaction.

Our navigation behaviors on discussion boards are very straightforward. When reading, we usually view the post first, then the signature if available followed by the username or a slight deviation. Hardly ever, we would ever think the avatar as clickable since our eyes scan the contents from a post to another (center of the screen), rather than the left side. People perceive avatar simply as an image representation of a user. Even if its clickable, it would simply lead to the image source rather than an external (troll) link.

TL;DR, it's unorthodox.

That would make the profile more commercial, wouldn’t it? I guess it's fine & working for its purpose "personal text". A link would not be fitted for the term "text". Therefore, I'm more comfortable with whatever it is now. There's no reason to have it clickable IMO.

And what prevents them from doing the same in their avatar and signature? (There's a personal website option too)
It is just more sneaky way, as what I pointed out due to font sizing. Not sure if many users tend to read PTs that often.
Signature and avatar are easily visible, imo since they are mostly the other things I see aside from the posts made by a user.

I agree what suchmoon said above you that is should be limited to higher ranks though if it will be implemented. Smiley

This topic may have already been discussed, but I couldn't find any related discussions in the meta section.

I think it may have been suggested in discussions about possible perks for a hypothetical post-Legendary rank.

I got a bad feeling that some users would sneakily promote scam project in there.
I don't read personal texts that much, since it is mostly just like another option to personalize your profile, not sure for other users though.

One can already promote scams in the signature, via avatar, or even via the unclickable personal text... no big difference IMO if we make it clickable but I would prefer it to be limited to higher/highest rank.

If links must lead to forum threads/links, bounty hunters will simply have the link set to a thread for the project they are supporting.
