What is necessary? Tracking his IP would definitely rule out nothing as he could have been using some VPN. But at least that would give us a direction. Individuals with enough means and motivation could track him down.
Let's be realistic however, the guy owns billions of dollars worth of cryptos that he is handling very securely in a way, so that none of the Bitcoins he has actually moved anywhere. A guy, group with such huge amounts of money could go to any lengths to keep their identities a secret.
The only question is why? The whereabouts of Satoshi is perhaps the biggest mystery of this century now.
and then the rest of the souls appeared after that and now Satoshi is nowhere to be seen while the souls that appeared later are still continuing his path and spreading the word.
