I think it depends on the situation, the real one. Having been able to choose between the two is just unrealistic. It's not true, so maybe the answer within her mind is "take the higher ground" since there's nothing to begin with. I believe if there's an actual $100 million in front of you and you try that question again, there would be a different answer.

Besides, having $100 million could help you get multiple degrees and even your family if you are really into education. It's a good investment for yourself, but having $100 million upfront is just not honest; that's probably why the person chose it.

The title says it all. "$100 Million for a First-Class Degree?" This sparked a heated discussion in one of my social groups today and I wanted to hear from people worldwide.

A student was asked if she'd trade a first class degree for $100 million. Her confident response was surprising. she chose the degree, believing it would offer more than the money. Is she right? Considering the current global economy and my country country for instance with a struggling economic situation, won't it be better to take the money? A good job is often the key to earning a similar amount over a lifetime. But when there's high rate of unemployment and most jobs requires an experienced graduate with certain amount of levels do you think it's better to still go for the first class degree?

While a first-class degree can attract attention from scholars on your field of study, will it put food on the table? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
my slogan is that "No money no degree". what is the essence of having degree without a financial backup. of course many graduate are out there struggling to make ends meet yet nothing to show forth, at this point there degree is like not useful. not that there degree is totally useless but at that point in time it is almost useless. if an opportunity of $100m is given to him or her it will be accepted. after all most graduate have not seen that amount throughout their lifetime.

Now first class degree will give you respect in the society and among your friends, it will give you more job opportunities and the feeling of fulfillment as being one of the best in your class there's no other thing first class degree is needed for however there's still probability that you as a first class degree won't be that successful in the society and having a $100 million still those not make you successful some set of people can still useless that money however if you use that money well you will achieve a lot even more than a first class degree holder, if two wise people hold each of this the one with the $100 million will become more successful there's no two ways about it.
And who cares about your class or respect when you don't have money? the society today no body will respect you if you don't have money. a degree holder can only be respected if he has money.

I would definitely take the money, even with first class degree i still think that making $100 million is unrealistic, but with $100 million you can become angel investor that could essentially boost your credibility and you'd be viewed as more credible compared to those fresh graduates.

let us be real when you got $100 million we're talking about being an investor not some employee anymore and you can do so many thing, if you're keen on investment as well you'd more likely to multiple that money from $100m it can become $1 billion. there are some people that said when you got a lot money like basically above $10 m making money become significantly easier because all opportunities are looking for you, not the other way around.

Most of us think she made the wrong choice because none of us can earn that amount of money but we also forget that no one knows about her abilities. Just because we can't make $100 million doesn't mean someone else can't. So whether her choice was right or wrong, only time will tell.
We do not know what her degree is. It could be something really useful and could give her more than $100 million if she were to use it properly. If it is something related to tech or the internet, she could make some serious money there. Those who want to choose $100 million just wants to be rich immediately but there is nothing wrong with that it's just that even with a degree she could still work hard for it and earn that much. A degree is also really important.

Honestly, her choice may seem silly to us but we should respect her choice and stop imposing our thoughts on her.

Just like when Gates or Mark Zuckerberg dropped out of Harvard, one of the most prestigious universities in the world, just to pursue their dreams. At that time, hardly anyone believed that they could succeed and become a billionaire until it happened. Or like Elon, no one ever believed or thought that he would become a billionaire and the richest man on the planet until he did it.

The same thing could have happened to that girl or any of us, we shouldn't judge others just because they have different choices than us or impose our thoughts on them.

Stop trying to pump of the value of stupid ass college degrees. I was a professor, and universities have promoted violence against me, and they REFUSE TO APOLOGIZE.

This means that such institutions have been DISCREDITED.

Multi billionaires like Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Michael Dell, Larry Ellison etc. have proven that getting a college degree is never a yardstick for success. You can get a first degree and not be able to make a million dollar all your life but with $100 million dollars in your purse, you can establish herself and later get as many degrees as you like. So, this is not something one should even think about, I'd speedily accept the money.
you are right there is so much more you can do with the money compared to the degree people arguing that the degree could make money but why wait when you already have the money available to you?

like you said anyone could study with 100 million and even graduate debt free at the same time you could create a business or invest in something with that amount of money

Well this question is really tempting and too good for anyone to who is asked this question because considering the present economic situation that the world is experiencing depending on your country I personally will choose the money over the certificate because with that amount of money you can even go back to school and get another degree and the money you will use it in establishing your self by way of setting up business which will be helpful going forward

But when there's high rate of unemployment and most jobs requires an experienced graduate with certain amount of levels do you think it's better to still go for the first class degree?

Is she right? Maybe not, maybe yes. First, let's consider the reason why she refused the $100 million over her first class degree, I believe we may not know the reason behind her refusal of accepting the money but I usually believe that people like her are learned enough to have known what will be more beneficial for them on the lung run and what will not be.

If she is really from your country and like you have explained that the economy is in a struggling situation  and also the lack of job is on the increase and the fact that she needs to get a well paying job before she could earn such amount, let's believe that she have put every of those things in consideration before making her decision, which means that she actually have a plan with that her degree which could earn her such amount.

Secondly, some persons doesn't believe that money is everything to them, they just want to live a comfortable life and doesn't want that so much money.

I know that this is a good cause but in the opposite negative way, it's just like asking someone if they will join you to rub a bank off $1 billion and promising them you will give them $100 million share, in such an offer, there are people who will risk their life to join you while someone else might not also agree to join you even if they are the poorest in that community, it's all about individuality and personality.

Considering it in another way round, what if the girl has a wide connection with rich people (or PEPs, [politically exposed personality]) who already promised her that if she bag a first class degree that they will award her a job or contract that is worth billion of dollars. It happens like that at times too, in the movie  Grin.

So, we can not conclude yet because we don't know what her main reason was.

This is not a matter of whether she is right or not, the answer to this question will always be subjective. Some people value their efforts more than money, so we can't crucify anyone for not taking the money. However, I only fault her response to this, she's too confident, but she forgot that she doesn't own the future, what if she doesn't achieve that amount? It's all about fate.

She believed she could make more through the degree, but forgot that many people with such a grade may not even make up to $5m their entire life. Besides, having $100m is a huge leverage for her, she can be the CEO of many companies at once and be making billions of dollars yearly in less than 10 years. She's not smart!

Why the fuse on this thread? Why's everyone being judgemental over her choice?

Nobody even cares to know the reason behind her choice. In cases like this, when you are being offered options, you can only choose the one that you lack and need it. In her own case, I assume money is never her problem. Perhaps, she's from a wealthy family or probably oversees a company that worth more than that amount. The point is that she needs degree more than the money and it's her choice.

On the other hand, she knew the person that asked her such question has no such amount to give her even if she had chosen the money over her first class degree. If that's the case, she chooses her degree knowing that she has it already than choosing $100 million which exist in a mere imagination. What is the choosing option you know can never come to reality?

I will only blame her for making a wrong choice if the above scenarios are not the case. If she's from a less privilege family that could do a lot with that money, choosing a first class is a very wrong decision in that case because job is not guaranteed in the labor market irrespective of your class of degree. They should have interview her so we can get the full story and know her reason for the choice she made.

I think she's ignorant, she doesn't know the value of a hundred million dollars and what it can do for her. Well, I ll assume that she's from the united states, the money is huge over there but it would be appreciated enough the way Africans would. A hundred million dollars in Nigerian naira is a lot of money and I don't think anyone from my country would make such a stupid choice. A first class degree might not even pay you up to that amount of money in 5 years. People with first degree are working for people that have third class, it's about making money not about your degree.
It doesn't matter where she comes from because $100 million is a huge amount of money no matter what country you live in. Even in America, you can still become a millionaire and live like a rich person with that amount of money. The United States is known as the country with the largest and richest economy in the world, but the cost of living is not so high that $100 million is not enough for us to live like rich people.

Most of us think she made the wrong choice because none of us can earn that amount of money but we also forget that no one knows about her abilities. Just because we can't make $100 million doesn't mean someone else can't. So whether her choice was right or wrong, only time will tell.

Why act? Money’s the main driver. A first-class degree might feed your ego, but it won’t always feed your bank account. So many graduates end up jobless or underpaid. The business world is competitive, the unemployment statistics are real, and a perfect GPA cannot totally eradicate that.

With $100 million, you can start your own projects, pay mentors, and possibly purchase shares in already-existing companies. You still have study and learning to do. Should the market turn down, a piece of paper will not cover your rent. Though they forget that money is also power, people often say that knowledge is power.

A degree, especially first-class, is still valuable if you love your field and want a formal route—like becoming a specialized researcher or a top-tier professional. Practically speaking, though, who turns down $100 million? That total can support lifetime of personal growth. The issue is whether you believe raw money is the true supercharger or the degree is the secret to success.

People don't go to college for the education. They go for the piece of paper that is increasingly becoming worthless as universities are diving deeper into unprofessionalism. Universities promote violence. And anyone who thinks that a degree is worth 100 million dollars is fucking delusional as shit and needs to be locked up. Instead of comparing a degree with 100 million, we should be comparing a degree with 5 years in a super max prison.

Personally, I would choose 100 million, because my dream of going to college is to get a big salary. The question is whether I can get a job right away and how long do I have to work to get 100 million, and also at what age can I get that much money, before reaching that much money, there are many things that must be spent for the interests or desires that I want to realize and so on which I think will take years that may not go well.

And if I choose 100 million, I can realize all of that with that money in a short time, and the money will not run out if I use it well so that some of the money can grow and I can use it to open a business, business and also Bitcoin investment or other things that make the money continue to grow for the journey of life and also the future. So it is better to choose what is real in front of your eyes than to choose something uncertain because having self-confidence sometimes does not necessarily go well or according to expectations.

That's her decision and you cannot question her for that. Maybe she had considered her hard work and the pride in getting such a prestigious grade and thought the certificate was worth more than that amount. However,, her thinking that such a grade will give her a job that will pay her more than $100 million is irrational. She might work all through her life and never make up to a million dollars. I also have a first class and will gladly give it out for less than that amount. My only reservation is when I will need the certificate for an appointment to serve my country. Some level of qualification might be required to handle some positions in government.

I would take the money over that degree any day. Where is Bill Gates’ college degree? There are many other billionaires who are college drop outs ot never entered one.

$100 million is definitely not pocket change. That’s life changing money.

Any college degree is meaningless against that kind of money. I think the student in OP is a bit stupid, no offense.

With that money you could hire the best teachers, best doctors, best trainers, best of anything. Basically you can have whatever you want in life. That fucking college degree too and I am not even talking about buying it out, I say that kind of money will unlock so many upgrades in your life, you will probably get a better education than a person that has “first-class degree”. It is something a student with first-class degree will probably never achieve.
