I live in Indonesia and while a first class degree may guarantee better job prospects in here, it is no guarantee of financial stability, an average university graduate earns $330 to $460 a month depending on the field. This doesn't even come close to $100 million, even in a lifetime. In the context of high unemployment and a harsh job market for fresh graduates, giving up $100 million for a degree is not practical. With $100 Million we can start a business business, or invest in ventures that yield long term returns. Sure I do agree that education is important, but $100 million offers immediate financial security and the freedom to create lasting impact.

But we are talking about $100 million... you could afford to study anywhere and anything, you could pay for the best private tutors and get the best internship possible. So why this is even a discussion? Just take the money and invest in yourself! You have money and time, and without any stress and worries, you will have all the possibilities for advancement.

If I had that choice, I would take the money for sure, and probably (apart from a few people) no one would see me again. I wouldn't chase any diplomas, nor more money... some house away from everyone that has everything.

Such a big offer for just First Degree you can have for 3 to 4 years and not even more higher Degree like Master, perhaps I believe that before such lady will turn down the $100 million offer is because she has already been promised a very prestigious position in company after her first degree that could possibly pay more than the offer before 7 years of the job because this kind of offer does not come randomly, it comes to only a gifted individuals from certain background of life, so actually in this kind of situation I don't usually blame such person for acting the way they did because there is always something behind every scene people failed to see, but if perhaps the lady does not have anything to fallback after her studies then I would say she made a mistake because the money is more than capable of changing not only her but also that of her entire family status, is funny to see how life work sometimes when someone will be rejecting offers while some person are just looking for $10k to do what the lady refuses to do.

We can not blame him because selecting a degree and avoid the money because he thinks he can do many things with his degree. We can choose whatever we want including selecting the money and leave the degree. For some people, pursuing the level of degree can make them confident and feel better because they are step ahead from other people. They can use their degree to apply recruitment in many companies and get a good job.

We don't know how we can put food on the table with that degree but we know that will depend on how strong our effort to get the money and buy for food. If we are not yet get a better job, we can search for other jobs that can gives us more income.

This issue is solved elementary. Better an egg today than a hen tomorrow. Is the student even sure that she will live to earn more than this amount? There are countries where the purchasing power of $100 million is such that you can live 10 ordinary lives or at least one life in luxury. And the funny thing is, no matter how the dollar is inflated, the global economy is designed in such a way that in such countries the purchasing power of the dollar will only grow. The population of these countries will be incredibly poor, but a man with a lot of dollars will be almost the king there.

A student was asked if she'd trade a first class degree for $100 million. Her confident response was surprising. she chose the degree, believing it would offer more than the money. Is she right? Considering the current global economy and my country country for instance with a struggling economic situation, won't it be better to take the money? A good job is often the key to earning a similar amount over a lifetime. But when there's high rate of unemployment and most jobs requires an experienced graduate with certain amount of levels do you think it's better to still go for the first class degree?
let’s define what a first class degree first

a first class graduate is a student who graduated with the highest grade possible with an undergraduate degree meaning grade that is above 70% for uk but maybe it’s different for each country and their curriculum

anyway i do think there is something to be cleared here did she graduate already with the degree she worked hard for? if that is the case it would make sense that she would choose that degree studying is expensive and surely it took a lot of her time, energy and money those who studied would understand how mentally draining studying is that sometimes no money could have taken that away from you

but from someone who’s never had a college degree, i wouldn’t mind taking the $100 million over the degree i can always study when i am rich enough and i will there faster with the $100 million

When I was a student, I also thought that with my education and degree, I would easily earn a lot of money and become rich. At that time, I didn't realize how difficult it was to make money, the power of money and what it could do. But after graduating and going to work, I gradually realized that life was not as rosy as I thought. So I'm not surprised and don't blame her for her choice. But I bet that in a few years, if given the choice again, she would not hesitate to give the completely opposite answer.

The choice is based on each person's knowledge and experience, so it is very normal for students to not have much experience in life and have some illusions about their abilities.

In countries where the governments cares about the masses and have esteemed recognition for schoollars and graduates, I think such a first class degree is worth more than the $100,000,000 because sometimes we actually chooses a fied of study as a passion to what we really love doing and worth doing it best as we can. That's just as having a job in the category of what we enjoy doing most so you can imagine when get paid while doing it.
I don't know the worth of that degree but I believe before anyone can offer to trade ones degree, then then degree would actually worth more than that price. Which means if the degree holder have to chase his/her dream with it and able to meet up the goal, it's definitely going to profit more than the $100,000,000 price.
But if the government or the first class degree holders seems hopeless on how to utilize the degree, then it's preferred accepting the price and divert your dream to some worth else.

i would say the "one hundred million" is of another currency that is already in hyper inflation, whereby 100m units of such currency is not even 10 years of salary. because turning down more income than 50+ years of salary is a foolish math lesson to get wrong

as for people preferring a career rather then a lump sum upfront equivalent to 50+ years of salary.. this could be a passion career, even if the math does not add up.. a passion career where the only method of entry is by doing an internship during their education, where the internship is the job interview for when they become qualified

i have seen some businesses recruit future workers a couple years before they even finish university(via internships), before they even get the job when qualified. purely because the business is future minded and wants people with the latest knowledge.. this is where the business and the student get to learn about whats best for the business and they make an agreement that over the totality of the subjects they learn, they decide to retain knowledge and do extra credit in the area's the business needs specifically. thus showing the business they are the best choice

the only issue is those types of businesses only keep people for 5-10years before the person becomes outdated/deadwood. but atleast they then have 5-10years of experience and have had time to plan the next employer to work for

if the employment sector didnt really have a passion that truly fits my desires, i personally would prefer to take the lump sum and start my own business in a passion i want to pursue..

The lady doesn't know the value of $100Million
That's just naivety speaking.
First Class degree doesn't guarantee success
And with the $100 million you can get yourself quite a lot of degrees of same level and even in different fields.
Not hard to say, money is now like a master on today's society

Besides there's nothing stopping me from picking the 100M and going to school and gain the certificate since I'm quite confident in my skill.

This thread is completely insane given how universities refuse to apologize for promoting violence against me.

As a student, she's still very optimistic about life and most likely too naive to know the reality of things that a degree may be worth nothing in the labor market, not as valuable as compared to highly being connected to the right individuals who can link you to a good job without a degree qualification.

She will likely regret later that she chose her degree.

To me it tells me that he is someone who is confident so he knows what he has to do when he answers like that with a lot of confidence.

It doesn't mean that he's illogical because at the end of the day no one will actually give $100 million for a degree because at the end of the day when there is a condition that does come true maybe the situation will be different.

Because of the possibility of supposition, it clearly shows that he is confident enough that there is knowledge in his title that he has to go beyond the $100 million mark. But in this case if the reality is given for a degree if it were me of course I would give my degree because in the end the degree is just a recognition from others but in the end even without the degree I have when the reward is $100 million with the knowledge gained from my degree then it will clearly be profitable for future capital although indeed things like this may return to their respective choices.

The title says it all. "$100 Million for a First-Class Degree?" This sparked a heated discussion in one of my social groups today and I wanted to hear from people worldwide.

While a first-class degree can attract attention from scholars on your field of study, will it put food on the table? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

I wouldn't blame her decision for taking such action, because one of the reasons why we are going to school to get a sound and quality education was to be able to afford a living, if having money is one of the advantages of going to school and one was given the money to have without stress, what else do one want than to take it and make use of it for many other achievements one may want to go after again in life, if such person make refusal of that kind offer, what assures that he could get up to that amount of money for the entirety of his life, it may be an opportunity and one have to be very careful of not missing such of its kind for any kind of stupidity, as for me, i will take the money.

Having a first class degree is very nice but one thing we most know is that having a first class those not make you creative and in other for you to make more than a $100 million after your graduation with a first class degree you need to be very creative in other to make such money working for someone with such degree won't get you such money.
Now first class degree will give you respect in the society and among your friends, it will give you more job opportunities and the feeling of fulfillment as being one of the best in your class there's no other thing first class degree is needed for however there's still probability that you as a first class degree won't be that successful in the society and having a $100 million still those not make you successful some set of people can still useless that money however if you use that money well you will achieve a lot even more than a first class degree holder, if two wise people hold each of this the one with the $100 million will become more successful there's no two ways about it.
