My guess would be bitcoin will never hit $10k, hope I'm wrong though.

Today it almost happened on CampBX, only 2% off, never say never Grin

yeahhh, i'm pretty sure that was some sort of API glitch. or it may have been a hack or where somebody exploited the API to use fake USD to buy up the order book. that was the top of the book, it looks like. and then Campbx goes offline.... Roll Eyes

It is not the first time happening on bitcoin exchanges, something similar happened on bitfinex in Feb.

hmm, why? i mean, i am not sure either way, but the historical trend says we could certainly get there. and with all these advancements in the industry/infrastructure, interest from institutional investors, green lights from governments.... i think we get there.
If history is any indicator then bitcoin will likely reach 10k in either the next runup/bubble or the one after the next.

It will never happen to bitcoin. Like Napster is unknown now. Something new will come into.

I'm not sure comparing to Napster is the best analogy -- Napster became a business model that was unsustainable. Nothing to do with the possibilities that bitcoin as a currency and protocol represent.
Don't listen to him IMO. Stop believing in some random magic altcoin. You actually can't compare those.

some altcoins could eventually become established. too early to say.

I think ebay and a big retailer like amazon would be needed for bitcoin to reach 10,000. 2000-5000 may be more likely, and that could be a year or two. It may also never get more than 1000 again, we don't know.

It's hard to say what is needed, really. If we were to see ETFs, a lot of institutional money that would never otherwise flow into BTC could get in. These types of investment firms have billions in holdings. Imagine..... Tongue

That too, I forgot about the EFTs. What I wonder about is if it'll drag alt prices along with it, or if bitcoin will go crazy while alts go down. It's weird to think of coins like litecoin or darkcoin being worth several hundred or more per coin, but if bitcoin is 10,000 and alts keep pace, that's about where they may be.

who knows with alts -- some might just die. some will see like 100x. huge risk, huge reward -- that's the nature of alts, when btc is already so risky. i will stick to trading btc until we are in a full blown bull market, then i'll get into alts when it looks like the bottom is in.

You may be right, but from the past experience, we have seen how difficult it is to predict future bitcoin price, as shown in https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/poll-how-long-until-1000-per-1-bitcoin-136780.

Traders tend to fall into the 80/20 Pareto distribution -- 80% lose and 20% win. Further, 80% of your profits will come from 20% of trades. It is clear that it is possible to predict bitcoin price -- within the realm of probability, of course -- but only a minority will be successful at it.

Hard to say, really. It might be come time that the wheat gets cut from the chaff for a lot of altcoins. We could see similar action to the late 2013 bubble, where alts were suppressed more and more, until they saw huge rallies near the top of the BTC/USD bubble.

maybe this year, maybe next. maybe never. bitcoin will always surprise -- both directions. i wouldnt be surprised to see it plunge to sub-$50, and go back up over $1000, then onto $10,000. vice versa. you never know. hard to predict this market. Cheesy
I would expect that bitcoin would reach 10k the next time we have a "bubble"

That's possible. But we've also (%-wise) been seeing increasingly less volatile bubbles, so it's certainly possible in my mind that the next one tops out at $4000 or $5000. If we get one. Never know. Smiley
Either way it will be very exciting for holders of bitcoin to see the price reach those levels. A price of 4k will likely entice a lot of large early adopters to sell their holdings, making it so the holdings are not as concentrated.

If we don't reach 10k in the next bubble, then we certainly would in the 2nd bulbble from now.
