I'm just saying that if a cop had done this, he would be facing charges.

Cops are (rightly) held to higher standards than 12 year old girls alone in their home with an intruder.

In principle.

Fair point. Wink
My understanding is that I could shoot only to stop an attack that could reasonably said to be an attack on my life. In court you will need to show how your life was in danger. In some states just breaking in is enough, in other states it is not.
If you keep a gun for protection you should be practicing shooting monthly at the least. You should mark out your firring positions and know what is behind them. If you do these things an attacker has little chance. They will be in an unknown place facing unknown forces. And don't hide. Hiding moves you to a crappy position, make the other guy try to hide. Lastly, don't show your gun or threaten them with it. It is for killing,  not tough talk. If you need the gun,  yell surprise!! and don't stop shooting until the attacker is done for.

All well and good, from your (surely greater than 12) years of experience, but this was a scared little kid. Put yourself in her shoes. I think we should just be happy she knew where the gun was and how to use it without hurting herself.

The lesson is: Don't scare little girls!
Fine with me and now spread that news.  Grin

She is a child who may well have saved herself. More power to her.
I'm just saying that if a cop had done this, he would be facing charges. Here in Wisconsin I assume I would go to jail for these actions. You can stop a threat to your life, but you can't shoot through a door at a scary noise. At least I think that's correct.

In many states, once you have entered someone's home*, all bets are off. (Castle doctrine).

*as an intruder

Let's talk governance, lipstick, and pigs.
I live in this county. This is where outlaws from Texas have been crossing the border to hide out from Texas lawmen for over a hundred years and has a bad reputation.

I was just kidding. In reality perhaps she should be charged with reckless endangerment for taking a blind shot?

Oh she put the intruder in danger by not shooting him in the open? Brilliant.
She put everyone around her in danger by shooting at what she thought was an intruder. Good thing luck was on her side.

I'm sure she had a reasonable belief that "everyone around her" was the intruder. Rather than luck that it was, it would have been extreme bad luck if it wasn't.

It's already been pointed out, a good guy would have called out for her.

the hell is a 'gary man' (a city named Gary)

anyway...we dont ever hear on the news:

"Man shot in altercation, family happy because man wasn't a good person"

I've heard variation on it to be honest. "We always knew it would be something like this..."

that's probably the closest it gets

I guess in theory, it could have been a cop or family friend who'd scared off the intruder and come to check she was OK. No harm, no foul in my opinion though.

Obviously, if it was a good guy, they would call out to her to find her.

Sometimes I have troubles understanding other peers, who's side you're on?

The guy was already trespassing a private property, and the girl knew there wasn't any other family member in the house. She used her other senses to decide when to pull the trigger like her hearing for example, which I assume you don't have after seeing such comments.
I try to look at each case individually. In this case it's important that she is a minor, so she should not be held to grown-up rules. But if she were an adult she might be in trouble for bind shooting an intruder. It is certainly not good form. I have little sympathy for the fool who broke in, but one should be damn sure of what they are doing if they going to solve their problems with a gun.

Good girl.
Well, she did miss his heart.  lol

It is hard to hit such a small target through a closed door. What she was trying to do was to get him to leave her alone, that seems to have worked out according to her plan. I am sure if the assailant had continued opening the door even after being shot at, then she would have had a clearer shot to finish him off.

I've seen similar cases. Robber breaks in, homeowner shoots him non-fatally, robber sues. Robber wins suit, gets homeowner's money anyway. I've even seen a case where someone broke in, fell onto a kitchen counter in the process, and was injured on the knife block. He won his suit, too. Ridiculous.
