EDIT: It is STILL closest to your range that wins.  For example, if the pool were to find a block right now, dennishh would be the winner even though 71.08% is not in his range.

This will change the next time I run this game.  Next time, to win, the actual value must be within your range to win.  It will follow Phil's contest model.  If there is no winner, then the potential winnings will be added to the next block.

It seems there's a pretty solid consensus from folks that the contest rules should be changed to enforce a gap of at least 1% between user guesses.  Phil makes a pretty strong argument for it - high hash rate rentals would last longer.  However, on the other side of the coin is LASERminer's argument that not everyone can afford those high hash rate rentals for long periods.

To be honest, I'm pretty much on the fence, and could be argued into either option.  On the one hand, I believe in free choice.  If somebody wants to pick 0.01% higher than me, it's pretty much up to me to pay attention if I've got some giant hash order pointed here.  By that same argument, I might now be scared to rent a large rental because, let's face it, nobody can be paying attention 24/7.  I might miss it when that "zone breaker" sees my giant hash rate and makes a guess just over mine, stealing the winnings.

Phil, in your own "guess the diff" thread you allow users to choose a range of X to Y percent.  That might be a good option here as well with a minimum spread of 1%.  So for example, your guess would be 69.07% to 70.06%.

So, why don't we give that a try and see how it goes.  From now on, your guess will be a range encompassing 1%.  If you only provide a single number, then I will assume that number to be the bottom of the range and your guess will be from that number to number +1% (as shown above, had Phil given me 69.07, his range would be 69.07 - 70.06).  Alternatively, you can provide your own range.  So, if you give me "88.12 - 89.11" then that's what will be recorded.  The limit of your range is 1% (I don't want somebody to be able to claim 82 - 102 for example) .

OK... let me redo the table with people's latest guesses as ranges.  Obviously, I'm not going to alter guesses that already exist if they are within 1% of each other.

we moved quick to 70.67 from the 70.65 and  the closest to 70.67 is still dennish   but anyone with a free move can simply move to 71.16  and cut off dennish


 with a minimum 2 percent gap  all cut throat goes away


lets say I like dennish  but I hate  seriouscoin     so lets say seriouscoin   grabs the 71.16 cutting off dennish  ..  I say fuck serious coin and cut my rental

Now I am renting and will let this rental play out  but then just go back to placeholder 120 gh  in compac sticks  as the tight picking is killing off the game.

I get that if you can not drop .1 btc to rent   you may not like the game   but if you are  at 74 in  the following    spot =       72 74 76

you have a good chance to win without the rental as with the rental WTF am I saying? The truth .   

  Just do your spot holding mining  and from

73 to 75   percent you win.   whether the pool  does 100th or 5ph in that percent slot  you are the winner as long as you are mining with at least a stick 


So crowded each other is simply pointless.

I agree.  I just finished my 2P rental that got us from 70 to 70.58 in about 30 minutes.  I would have let it go longer if there was more of a gap.  I'll be choosing my next guess based on largest gap after my 10%, just like I picked this one.

Probably I should oppose this in the name of small guys who cannot afford rental but true is seeing big hash power on the pool (like 5PH last night) only for few minutes and passing by without block is more frustrating than looking at my pick passing by...

Completely agree. If the gap is to small it does not make sense to make a big rental with the chance of the price going to someone very near you. So the 2% suggestion is very reasonable ...

I signed up with NH using your link, but there was some kind of error trying to verify my email so I haven't been able to finish registration yet.  I'm hoping to get it set up in time to throw some hash here when my guess window comes up.  Hopefully you get the credit for my sign up, if not let me know and we'll make sure you do.

A suggestion to jonny  don't allow picks to be closer then 1 or  2%

The incentive to rent big is not much when people are so close to each other.

I rented 1ph but for only 0.01 coins Since the spreads are too close

so that rental moved us from 69.06 to 69.15.

So with every right next to each other  the incentive to rent a ph for  2 hours means I would be helping others since the gaps are too tight.

most people are just too close to make renting big fun.
