I think the point is...

You may be able to make a little more by mining @ a pps pool during the beginning of slush's rounds, then coming on at the back end of a round on slush to get your reward for that block.

BUT, you won't be taking extra profits from everyone else @ slush.  You will still be getting your fair share.  As opposed to mining only right at the beginning of rounds, when you find a very short round, you actually make more than you normally would, and take a percentage of the share from the other miners on slush.

I could be way off base here, but that's how I interpreted it...

So you are saying a miner working for an hour before a block is found is not actually doing anything towards finding the block?
You are contributing little work but getting a big share from the block. The block has the same value no matter how many miners are involved, so those who have been mining continually with slush have to lose out!

Yes, you're viewing a round as one monolithic problem solved by the pool for the network. Except the problem solved is extending a chain, so everytime a block is found on the network the problem changes. It's all a race with randomness thrown in.

Currently latest drivers and SDK

You're doing it wrong.

12.10 drivers work better for mining.

Also had in on... It looks like cgminer issue. What I have to delete to reset openCL for it? I thought I have to delete file like phatk121016Pitcairnv1w256l4.bin but is there more?

It actually sounded like he got the problem narrowed down.  He got the expected hash rate with guiminer, so he was going to troubleshoot the issue with cgminer...

I would help there, but I'm not very familiar with cgminer, I pretty much only use guiminer, or bamt sometimes...

Ah, idiot strikes again...

Check the fans, the cooler it runs, the better performance you'll get.  Is it the same setup as when you got the 465mhs?  If not I would look at the differences if you can.  What version of cgminer, what version of opencl/driver, over/under clock values, etc.  Although, aside from the over/underclocking I haven't seen too much varience based solely on software version differences.

Cooling would be the first place I would look next...

Temp: 60C
Setup about the same as I can remember but I'm not sure about driver SDK combination
cgminer same...
1249 core
625 mem
no overvoltage

Currently latest drivers and SDK but I have also used some others...

But! Just to check it. I install guiminer right now. For some reason I get 453 out... So isn't all you need to do just delete bin file from cgminer directory to reset opencl for it? What do I have to do?

Anyone using 7870 with Win7 x64? I can't get more then 350 out of it but if should be 465 (1250 core). I did ask in hardware forum but got noting useful jet... And only one who is using Linux is answering and this doesn't help since his combination crashes my cgminer... I can't remember Driver SDK combination...

What flags are you using?

Also, what is the make of the 7870, i find a fairly large variance in different brands of the same card.  Ex. XFX 5770 will get 205mhs while th Powercolor will only get 185mhs with the same settings.

GHz... And it was doing 465 so I know it can... Well but if you read higher you know it had meting with the idiot... So it could be do to this...

EDIT: cgminer not guiminer so no flags only -I 9

That's one way of looking at it.  the other way is...  No one knows how long it's gonna be before we find a block.  So I'm going to set my miners and forget them for the best average payout on all blocks.

Because you can say that miners aren't contributing for the first hour of a block, or you could say they are helping to find the block in less than a hour.  It's all relative, math, averages, etc.  Play the averages, it's your best bet.

For the larger ones its pretty easy to tell if there are hours left on a block with 98% certainty at least.

If going off averages was safe then the time based reduction in value of shares isn't needed! Its there because people can take advantage of the system.

That was a perfectly good translation, thanks!  Better than I'm sure google would give.  Nice to have a few inside details, but I'm still glad slush has moved on. Hopefully it reduces his workload a bit on the new servers.
