Sounds about right:

http://www.coindesk.com/survey-9-of-americans-still-puzzled-by-bitcoin-logo/

Quote
9% of Americans were left feeling "puzzled" or "confused" after being shown the bitcoin logo, according to a recent survey by The Digital Currency Council (DCC).

The survey, which asked 504 people across the United States to provide a one word response to the logo, also found that 7% felt "nothing".

Approximately 5% of those surveyed recognised that the image had something to do with either "money" or "wealth", whilst 3% noted that it represented bitcoin.

The survey also found that 2% of people expressed indifference and the remaining 1% failed to know what the symbol meant. The remaining responses can be viewed here.

David Berger, founder and CEO of the Digital Currency Council, spoke about the implications of the results:

"What does this mean for bitcoin as a brand? Quite simply, the diversity in response means that the brand doesn't yet stand for much of anything. Mainstream America doesn't know much about bitcoin yet, so there is plenty of room for its re-introduction."

He added: "That said, this is also evidence that past outreach and educational efforts have yet to establish a meaningful and common understanding amongst most consumers."

This is the second in a series of DCC Pulse Reports on public perceptions of digital currency.

All this means is that we haven't even been released yet.  We're still in secret closed door beta stage right now.

Lots of room to grow, to correct, and to fully introduce ourselves to the public.

What would you guys do to improve Bitcoin's brand recognition?
If you look at any other polls including presidential polls at this point you'll see that most are unknowledgable at most and ignorant at best. There's almost no attention being payed to bitcoin or the presidential election or primary at this point.

So basically, the question is asking a bunch of dumbies and yes, I'm from the states and know how things go here. You don't poll derelicts and expect any intelligent responses. I'll stop here for now.

i don't get why only 5% of surveyed Americans recognized BTC image had something to do with either "money" or "wealth". it is so similar to dollar sign ($) so it should be an obvious guess!

LOL. That's how Satoshi designed it. It might as well be the dollar sign "S" wrapped around a "B".

Create a day where we ask everyone in the world to use Bitcoin for that one day.

sure, but everyone will have too work together on this one.
and I doubt the governments will be happy with that.  Grin

it's good that 5% of respondents suspected that something that looks like a dollar sign could be about money.

9% of Americans and all people are complete idiots, honestly I am not worried about 10% of any people not understanding something. I bet 9% of people are still puzzled by email or cd's.

I don't think that they would be idiots. Bitcoin just needs time to take off. We are still just a fistful of geeks and speculators Smiley.

I agree with you, we're still hidden, especially in my country, Bitcoin is just something small for my country, but for me, it's something big, it's a future currency Grin

To improve Bitcoin's brand recognition, I'll tell Bitcoins to my classmates, friends, and everybody in my country. I'll tell them that Bitcoin is currency of the future, and make them to interest in Bitcoin Grin

I've known bitcoin since 2012, and I don't know what the bitcoin logo is. I recognize it, but I didn't know it was bitcoin's official logo.

It's not “official”, but it's the most widely used one.

It's not unsurprising to me at all. Bitcoin hasn't really even started to make a dent in the mainstream consciousnesses yet. For most who are not up to date with technological advances they probably only even heard of it on the news because of the involvement with sIlk Road etc. Once more 'legitimate' businesses or industries start transacting with it more people will see the true potential and legitimate uses over time.

The problem in here is general bad credibility of surveys of all sorts. Especially if you ask 500 people and then claim that 9% of Americans are Puzzled.
I would not trust in this type of "research" at all, after all this proves only one thing - we need to promote bitcoin harder.

It's not 9% of all Americans though.  9% of all surveyed said "confused or puzzled" as their one word answer to the logo picture.  Basically out of all the one word answers, 9% was the largest number percent, and that word happened to be "Confused".

Sorry the thread title is a little confusing to understand.

Terminated.
I guess that those 9% live under some rock or something. I definitely think that this number would be much higher in 3rd world countries. If you take into account what the average person thinks about, and what their priorities are, it's no wonder. Until Facebook and Instagram (or other cam. software) add a Bitcoin logo, the youth will stay ignorant.

I looked at the word cloud, and it's obvious the vast majority of people have no idea what bitcoin's logo means.

For example, some people answered "blueberry" or "sexy". Lol. There are very few answers that one who knows what bitcoin is might answer: stupid, liberated, greedy, money.

But it seems the rest, probably 90% doesn't know what the bitcoin logo is. Not suprising. I mean I'd be surprised if this wasn't the case. I've known bitcoin since 2012, and I don't know what the bitcoin logo is. I recognize it, but I didn't know it was bitcoin's official logo.

After reading the second article in the link, it made me even more confused. If more than 9% reported feeling “puzzled” or “confused” by the bitcoin image with the rest which adds up to about another 18%, then how about the rest of the respondent? I presumed it's the total opposite of feeling puzzled. Something doesn't sound right over here.
