My recommedation would be for them to buy bitcoin and either day trade it or hold it for a price increase. This IMO would be the option with less risk!

I wouldn't advice that person to invest his $1000 worth of Bitcoin. It might sound very boring to some people, but simply holding your coins in cold storage for a few years is the best advice I can give.

This would be my hope as well.  I would hope a young person would hold since they could for 20+ years if they want.  They could be millionaires in their 30s or 40s depending on how young they are when they get btc. Short term gains are not needed for the youth.

Let's say a young teenager is given some coming-of-age money from their family, and is interested in growing that money through Bitcoin. Without encouraging him/her to invest in risky strategies, what are some lower risk methods of growing a Bitcoin portfolio with a hypothetical gift of $1K?

Well, a young teenager who still can't control their mental. For me better invest on bitcoin. I mean wait the price down and buy them all. after that, when the price increase sell them all. and repeat.

I would do some trading and increase it by little amounts as it slowly gets larger.

Legendary Escrow Service - Tip Jar in Profile
He could upload it on bitfinex and use the free MarginBot to lend the USD out to traders. He would receive around 20% a year. At least it was that way some months ago.

The risk would be that bitfinex is an exchange and exchanges can go down.

Investments are always risky. You should think of them the way that you might get 100% in a year on top of your investment but when you start you lose 100% and the question is open if you will get your investment back at all.

Buy as much as they can before the halving because the consensus is that the price will go up significantly sometime at or after that. And then go from there.

This...or:
with 1kUSD you can easily buy 2 x ant S7 at hashnest. Each S7 can actually mine 3usd per day after maintenance, electricity and shits. 3USD per day X 30 days X 2 (AntS7) == 200USD per month. He/She would ROI in a few months, still having principal available: hashnest allows you to sell your hashpower, even partially (of course your profit would decrease).

You can teach the teen about the chinese phenomena and teach them to move wisely with investments, trading, mining, risks etc, having as background a giant hardware builder like Bitmain with its own pool (the most thrustworty investment i see around atm).
BW does the same too but prices are a bit higher. Growing up enough, that teen could start renting out his/her hashpower to people say 10-15% higher than its cost aka a para-sub cloud mining mini-company.
Yes, S7 profit will decrease with time, expecially facing the halving but i'm pretty sure there will be S8,S9,Sx or whatever ASIC suppliers will come out with.

Please! Dont teach a teen with ponzi, gambling, etc...

There is no such thing as investment any more. With zero or negative interest rate, saving money in bank pays nothing. Stock market return is low and itself is risky. Bitcoin investment even worse, most of them scam. I think go to p2p site borrow 1k makes more sense. And see if anybody can still make money.

I like the answer , but i think she or he can go with buying any full member account and start earning through signature campaign. this is also one way of earning without risk
Any teen has enough time to get a full member account in his/her own. No need to buy it, just be patient.

What time scale are we talking about here? Teens are in the age of needing money they don't have. In 20 years he/she won't need $1k, so unless it's gone up a lot, $1k means more to the kid now than it would mean to the adult in the far future.

One thing I will say to them is this, never ever take investment advice from your family, they don't know shit and have their own ideas about how investments work, do your research before putting that kind of money anywhere.

There are still people out there who genuinely think that pensions and premium bonds are a good investment idea.

Let's say a young teenager is given some coming-of-age money from their family, and is interested in growing that money through Bitcoin.
Without encouraging him/her to invest in risky strategies, what are some safe methods of growing a Bitcoin portfolio with a hypothetical gift of $1K?

Others may come along with more helpful information,
but there are basically two types of investments with bitcoin, IMO:

1) Risk Investments (lending, ponzis, gambling, altcoin trading, btc trading, chinese online wallets give interest (may be scams IDK) etc)
2) Holding Investments (just hold for a decade or two and profit)

If there were truly safe methods of actually growing your btc, I want to know as well.
