This was a real helpful post, unfortunately I fell victim to a wallet stealer as well for $400 USD Sad....well not technically a wallet stealer but I had went to some TOR website and apparently someone was able to do a JAVA-ish type drive-by on me and I was on MtGox at the time and they were able to steal my wallet just based on my cookie info.  I guess sometimes the best lessons have to be learned the hard way.

I wouldn't worry too much, its just a bandwagon thing, most of the alt coins will cease to be after a set time, its why theres no point giving a second glance, they are usually released after the creator has mined a crap load which sells on launch then abandons the whole thing, new coins also need to have their source checked as it can easily be manipulated to benefit an individual or small group.

Way too many alt coins coming out at the present. Good for miners I suppose, but I would think this is detrimental to cryptos on the whole. Too watered down imo.

Its also down whats hash efficient, some peoples rigs mine Scrypt way faster than SHA-256. Sometimes its not always down to how much the coins worth.

LTC is an alt coin and is not a scam. Some pickup , some dont. It all depends on luck and of course the community support

When finally there is an AltCoin that provides something more over bitcoin.... will there even be a real chance for an altcoin....
But currently .... most all the altcoins suffer from the same simple problem.... a blockchain that just grows and grows and grows.... kinda like a cancer....
Once something fixes that issue.... then there will be even more potential for whatever system (altcoin) fixes that....

I mined some of the other ones but the reward was too low to make it worth it.

It was worth it for a while with FTC, but I've gone back to LTC.  I still get the fun plus a little profit.   Smiley

I'm trying my hand at DGC right now since it looks to be doing pretty well ... I set up a site the other week to help show how they all compare and what your estimated earnings might be with your hash speed - www.WhereToMine.com

You just have to make sure you choose correctly, nothing that a little research, math, reading doesn't solve. Also its never a good idea to jump on a new coin anyways as the Market and Difficulty is too flimsy to even consider making the investment.

That is how evolution works. You start with Bitcoin; you have mutations. The successful ones will prevail! Just because Bitcoin is the most valued today does not mean it will be in the future.

I have earned more money mining and dumping Alt coins than bitcoin.

Imagine a world with only one fiat currency? Imagine the internet with only Bitcoin?

I also have having to post boring junk so I can actually post the things I need to Roll Eyes

Very true points.  The problem I see is that the average user of alt-coins is going to end up at a loss when trying to do that.  I've definitely lost out of profit because of stuff I was doing with alt coins.

SolidCoin is looking pretty promising. I've got 50 in a wallet somewhere. Who wants them? $5000 per coin. SolidCoin is the future!
Newbie question: Why not keeping SolidCoin, if SolidCoin is the future? Seems a little bit that USD has a better future than SolidCoin???

It was a joke. SolidCoin was shit and died a long time ago. 99.99% of all these new copycoins coming out will fail after they are pumped and dumped.

I will second Lightcoin because over time the exchange rate has been trending upwards and I expect that many GPU miners will switch to Lightcoin after ASICs become more prominent on the bitcoin network.
