Thank you for your post, I have been warning users for the better part of two years now. There have been numerous scam attempts by impersonators, primarily via email. The said scammers are masking their real email addresses so users believe that they are talking to me over email, and send bitcoins without requesting a PGP signature or proof that I was in control of the bitcointalk account.

Given the outcries I have received over the past 2 years, I estimate that XX.XX bitcoins have been stolen. Please exercise common sense and take some steps to ensure that you are talking to the right person.

Hi everyone,

I took a hiatus from Bitcointalk and cryptocurrency over the past few years and am saddened to come back to see so many impersonators successfully scamming multiple users on here. I've posted multiple warnings over the past few years about impersonators - I have never used or owned a Telegram account and will never email you first.

It's really frustrating to read the recent posts here to know that if I had set this thread to INACTIVE/CLOSED, certain scams may have been prevented. I deeply apologize for not being more proactive - life got in the way and I've been inactive in this community since 2018.

That being said, you need to be extremely cautious when dealing with strangers on the internet. I have never mentioned that I use Telegram, so not sure why people are so trusting of someone with the same name there, without receiving verification from my account on bitcointalk. I've posted multiple warnings over the past few years, including in the OP regarding scammers and impersator activity.

PGP messages have no use if you don't know how to verify them. Conduct due diligence when engaging in transactions online, make sure you get confirmation AT THE SOURCE.

Hello, so I've been trading from a person on telegram named @visesento (he is the scammer). We both agreed on the deal, 1000$ movocash for 350$ btc. As we both were unsure about trustness, he offered to hire Monbux. We both wrote an email to him, asking if he can help us to trade safely. Provided details, offer and our telegram ID's. He (@MonbuxBitcointalk) created telegram group within like 10 minutes. Then, where my lack of knowledge occured - he sent me a PGP signed message, which I checked on keybase.io/verify :

Putting this message in it shows, that the message is signed by monbus (Huh?) . So this is where I fucked up, not sure how this works.
After this, I've sent BTC to his address ( transaction ID :https://www.blockchain.com/btc/tx/be618f8c287069dc2cec573070498e90455e3a66d78bcdac5a983a3ad2057882 )
Then, ofc, even after confirmations I didn't get my movocash from the seller. Started asking questions, no response. No response from guy, acting as escrow and no response from the seller.
Today he magicly replied, but only when other guy contacted him ( here is SS, how I managed to reach 'monbux' : https://prnt.sc/tdc7z9 , https://prnt.sc/tdc8mm , https://prnt.sc/tdc926 ) .
And later all our conversation (https://prnt.sc/tdcaw3 , https://prnt.sc/tdcbbr , https://prnt.sc/tdcbmq , https://prnt.sc/tdcbwr , https://prnt.sc/tdcc68 , https://prnt.sc/tdccfp ,  https://prnt.sc/tdccl7 , https://prnt.sc/tdccvc ,  https://prnt.sc/tdcd21 , https://prnt.sc/tdcda4 , https://prnt.sc/tdcdl4 , https://prnt.sc/tdcdu0 ,  https://prnt.sc/tdce0j , https://prnt.sc/tdcehk  ), coins weren't sent yet to other address,  but I am already sure, that I've been scammed.

so guys, watch out and don't make same mistake as I've did. Smiley

P.S. Monbux, can you explain how this PGP works?

Thanks @nutildah for explaining - yes, it seems like this is a PGP message I signed 6+ years ago with my old address (1Q2CupiU5DfWupRGBQ66QYRqvxoNxGZCcn). It shows as verified because the scammer put the text "Monbux Bitcointalk, [04.07.20 20:00]" OUTSIDE the PGP signed message, so it was ignored by the verifier. Try putting anything outside of it and it'll verify, since the verifier only reads in between the

and
-----END PGP MESSAGE-----

I'd like to thank the bitcointalk community for all the support, great memories, and memes over the past 7+ years. I'll continue to lurk around every once in a while, and hope that by closing this thread + this message, we'll prevent scams moving forward. Will leave thread open for 24 hours more for any comments prior to closing.

Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions/comments. PM me (HERE, not on telegram... :p)

Hi got a telegram mesage from Monbux about escrow at @Bubuk_btc, can you confirm it is you?

If read 2 posts up from yours you'd have known that you were talking to a scammer.

I'm going to red tag Monbux until he closes this thread as a warning for those who talk with scammer impersonators on Telegram or email.

Some possess the ethos that it is better to let people be scammed as to let natural selection run its course and weed out the weak, but I am not such a person.

Fact: Monbux hasn't performed an escrow deal on the forum for a year and a half. Even though they log in from time to time their lack of communication in this thread renders them ipso facto inactive.

MONBUX IS NO LONGER AN ESCROW UNTIL THEY CONFIRM HERE OTHERWISE.

It's unlikely to be Monbux - they have logged in a couple of times, but people have posted similar questions which go unanswered.

hi i want your escrow service.

Monbux is no longer an escrow. If somebody contacts you on Telegram claiming to be Monbux, they are a scammer.

The real Monbux needs to lock this thread as its only purpose for the last couple years has been to help scammers.

It's a bit irresponsible of him to continue leaving the thread unlocked at this point.

Unfortunately I fell for this SCAM. I came to read about this topic when it was late. He ran off with 3k BTC from me.

Can you leave a screenshot and telegram name?

Somebody just messaged you on telegram and not the forum I'm guessing.

Your first mistake was not making them contact you on forum.

Your second mistake was assuming Monbux was an active escrow and agreeing to "hire" him (actually it was his impostor) before reading his escrow thread.

(snipped)

What happened was the scammer sent a signed message that was already in the keybase of the real monbux.

The signed text actually reads this:

Code:
{"body":{"cryptocurrency":{"address":"1Q2CupiU5DfWupRGBQ66QYRqvxoNxGZCcn","type":"bitcoin"},"key":{"fingerprint":"4a9aa15044a68891085cba95fe28a8b97bac8955","host":"keybase.io","key_id":"fe28a8b97bac8955","uid":"4eba68153623310300502fc55ab47300","username":"monbux"},"type":"cryptocurrency","version":1},"ctime":1411319918,"expire_in":157680000,"prev":null,"seqno":1,"tag":"signature"}

It was signed in September 2014. I suggest you only deal with escrow services on the forum and not Telegram going forward.

There is a Scam Accusation against this user here (I have forwarded your post there already). If you need help opening a red flag on this user to alert other forum members that this guy is a scammer, let me know and I'll show you how to do that.

The real @monbux should change the title of this thread to INACTIVE and lock it as scammers pretending to be him have now stolen far more BTC than he made acting as an escrow during the last 2-3 years.

If you ever receive a Telegram message about using monbux as an escrow, it is a scammer! The person you are chatting with is a scammer, and the person pretending to be monbux on TG is a scammer.

Do you see any mention of Telegram as a method of contact listed here?

Contact Methods

(in order from most effective to least effective):

1. Bitcointalk Private Message
2. Posting on this thread (if you do this you should also send a PM)
2. Gmail: [email protected]

No! He doesn't deal through Telegram. Also, he won't email you first. So if you receive an email from monbux out of the blue, it is 100% likely to be a scammer.
