An Italian cryptocurrency exchange called BitGrail says it was hacked and some $170 million worth of a currency called Nano is missing.

Hey, post the link where you read this. I'm yet surprised that people leave their bitcoin on exchanges.

Why I don't like my bitcoins on exchanges:

1) Highest hacking in terms of money happens on exchanges, which is supposed to be secured but suddenly it's not.
2) No private key and seed is a perfect recipe for disaster.
3) I don't like forks but as and when happen you're left on the mercy of exchange, plus add suspension of trading lol.

I hope better sense prevails and if anyone has money on exchange move it to electrum or Trezor or paper wallet, there're more this are my favorites.

I agreed that keeping crypto in exchanges is risky. Such cyber hacks can really cause chaos if the affected exchange can’t afford to pay the users. And there goes our hard earned and valuable coins.

Hackers are very annoying and very cruel in taking money, with huge losses must be very painful for them, hopefully this will not happen again in other markets.
I agree with you and this thing makes me worry and I think not only me but also to the btc community. But whatever happens to the world of crypto I believe they can still continue to survive and probably it will be getting stronger as the days goes by.

the worst kind of peoples too. It is because the crypto popularity has risen much more.
Hackers are everywhere just to get huge funds in any way. This makes cryptocurrency world of some users may got panic to sell. This scenario could lead us to be more careful of our bitcoin holdings.

its been second time in 3 weeks. first on was in japan and now here.

More than that, there are attacks all the time now, and many phishing attempts - in fact you can even buy bitcointalk.org's email and password list TODAY, so make different passwords in the wild and ALWAYS enable 2FA!!!!!

I do not know about that cryptocurrency.  But one thing is for sure, hackers are modern day thieves.  They will always stole things that they did not put efforts to.  Anyways we really have to take care of our possessions.  In these days we cannot guarantee our safetiness, we just have to always secure our passwords.

Users never learn the lesson to keep coins and tokens in a wallet or ledger or anything similar to keep you coins safe. It's been more than 3 years since MTGox got "hacked" followed a year later by cryptsy ....it's just the fact that we are on an early stage of cryptos and safety it is an issue until now.

After i read and hate the dozens of FUDs that circulate on the internet, to this day i don't believe in any negative speculation about bitcoin nor cryptocurrency.

What is Nano currency? Is it new currency? I never heard about this.
Anyway the crypto Exchanges are always the target of hacker.

NANO is a coin called XRB and he occupies position No.24 at https://coinmarketcap.com/

This one isn't familiar but I searched on Google. It's really disgusting how people can manage to hack and get the money for the sake of themselves. Yes digital world is really risky because of people like them. It doesn't matter if they hacked small amount or huge amount of money, they still stole something and that is illegal!

this is the risk of investment in the Digital world, and the main enemy of investors, in addition to market fluctuations is Hacker !!
and the difference is, the losses can be minimal, but hackers can spend our assets until nothing is left, I've heard "if there is no security is really safe" because every server on the internet has a weakness

Read this for better understanding of the issue.
https://news.bitcoin.com/cryptocurrency-exchange-bitgrail-suspends-operations-losing-170-million-nano/

It is somehow really disturbing how hackers are so capable of doing such crime and steal millions. It is really saddening, maybe they should put up their security level to a higher point to stop this from happening.

All the very suspicious....

Probably just took the money users

An Italian cryptocurrency exchange called BitGrail says it was hacked and some $170 million worth of a currency called Nano is missing.
Another cryptocurrency exchange got hacked, this kind of fraudulent activities are now happening very often and I smell something fishy about this, they reportedly announced that they will block all Nano/Raiblocks withdrawal outside Europe few week ago and now they lost $170 million worth of Nano? lol. What ever the reason of this loss (hacked or inside job) they should return those coins to their customers or they will become another mtgox. Anyway this is the source on what OP is saying https://steemit.com/bitgrail/@stevensteel/bitgrail-just-lost-all-17-million-nano-raiblocks-coins-in-their-system
and this https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@santana33/urgent-nano-bitgrail-hacked

Nano is the same with Raiblocks, they just re-branded it. All cryptocurrency exchange are prone from hacking but most of the victims are those exchange with poor system security or if there is something like inside job.

Could not understand how are this exchanges getting hacked.  Isn't the time has come as this exchanges ask for the KYC details any user who register also get the KYC of this exchanges so that even the trader is aware of all the details of such exchanges which exists and can make the rationale choice if should trade on such sites or not after he doing his KYC personally of such exchanges.

I think government and regulating bodies needs to hold exchanges responsible for customers funds. As an exchanger the security of your customers funds is paramount and it should more or less be stored outside the exchange platform.

Important notice
Bitgrail S.r.l. Informs its users that internal checks revealed unauthorized transactions which led to a 17 million Nano shortfall, an amount forming part of the wallet managed by Bitgrail S.r.l.

Today a charge about those fraudulent activities has been submitted to the competent authorities and now is under police investigation.

We inform you that the other currencies have not been involved.

In order to conduct further verifications, all the activities will be temporarily suspended (including withdrawals and deposits). This procedure is indispensable for users security.

We do offer our full and sincerest apologies to our customers and to whom has been involved into the illegal transfers of Nano occurred on our platform.

Other announcements will be released shortly.

Thank you for your attention.

Another lessons here. (not again). Everyone should be really cautious in putting almost all their funds on a trading platform because hackers are really targeting them because of the money. Though I don' think that this will greatly impact the market because its not one of the big exchanges and what was lost is not bitcoin, it's still painful to hear people losses big amount of money because of those hackers who is nothing different from criminals now.

My goodness. This is such a huge price which may help most of the worker who deserves it, scams involving cryptocurrency has been rapidly increasing nowadays, and even here , like Symmetry Fund Campaign was a huge disappoinment for those who works for it cause imagine 13000 Eth, and in a blink of an eye they were gone.
