PANIC SELL!!

Price has just dropped to $30...

Im buying at $29  Cool

On which exchange?

He's bullshitting. There really isn't a big issue. In fact, I usually don't upgrade my software until there are other versions out after the one I upgrade to, so that I can avoid any issues like this. So everyone just relax.

The issue isn't with 0.8, it's with 0.7 and lower. Because people like you didn't upgrade, we had to endure this chain fork.

Yep, my 600mhash is really fucking the network.

If all the pools, miners, merchants, and users upgraded, this would have been a non-issue.

regular bitcoin clients are ok at 0.8?

Yes, you are, just don't send or receive any coins until this is solved, and you're safe.

Granted I'm mining, but just rolled back to 0.7.0 and can update to current block just fine.  Seems to be no issue now hopefully.

I figure both clients would send the same information along about a transaction whether 0.7 or 0.8 so how could a fork be made in the first place?

Well talk about bad timing. Literally as the news flash hit, I sent a large amount of coin from one PC to another. The receiving PC runs 0.8 and the sending was much much older. The transaction seems to have worked, and the recipient PC is picking up confirmations, so I am hoping these transactions are all safe.

Death to enemies!
Just my 0.5 bitcents to calm down the panic - Bitcoin protocol was not compromised, regular users should not change Bitcoin software version right now, only miners should change back to 0.7.

Now sell all your coins so I can buy them for cheap!

Coins are safe, but the current value in them is not. This will have consequences.

Right now I don't understand how can coins be safe if transaction was made on the 0.8 blockchain? I'm hoping for a detailed official answer from the devs.

Coins are safe because your transactions will exist in the 0.7 blockchain too. Only issue is double spending and that's why you should not buy any coins from anyone right now.

I don't see how this can be handled without any coin loss, what about all those block rewards that were mined after the fork? how can they be re-distributed to the rightful owners?

I was building on my previous post stating "if they have more than 11 confirmations as of block 225446". But you are right that it was misleading, just trying to write as fast as one can.

is it safe to redeem private keys on gox?

GoxUSD, GoxBTC and any other Gox-currency is safe, BTC traded on Gox is not on the block-chain, only in Gox database, it's virtual BTC so to speak. The only time Gox touches the block chain is for deposits and withdrawals.

So - yes it is safe.

sorry can you elaborate on this? reverting to 0.7 means the qt client has to be 0.7? I just upgraded to 0.8..

is that what you mean by it?
Only miners need to do so. General users need not to panic.

PS: Thread posted to Important Announcements.

my rigs are mining on cgminer 2.10.5 so I'm confused as if I'm mining on .5 or .8

You are not solo mining, so it depends on which bitcoin version your pool is running.

This is going to be on every nerd news website in 24 hours. What a black eye. A few people can stop bitcoin from functioning properly and not even mean to do it.

No, no, it's like the NASA adventures... we aaaaalmost lost contact with our Mars Rover, but then after hard work from our engineers, we finally made contact with it again, it's all fine and dandy now! Everybody cheers at the great NASA bitcoin engineers, and life goes on.  Grin
