This is a gorgeous natural octahedral spinel crystal from Sri Lanka. Spinel is a close relative of ruby, and in fact the same marble host rock that creates ruby creates spinel- the only difference is the chemicals present when the gemstone forms. Madagascar is producing amazing garnet lately but we never know how long a particular deposit will last. Forget the nasty brown-Red hues of most garnet- this is beautiful red with just a tiny splash of orange to give it a strong, vivid punch of color.
