I completely agree, I think that addiction reaches a level where players are always looking to gamble in any way possible, sometimes I have realized that they do not care about winning a lot, no, what matters to them is being there as if it were the only entertainment in the world and if they do not do it anxiety overcomes them and they begin to act in external ways, all addiction is harmful , they do not sleep well, they do not rest at all, all the time they look for money to be able to gamble , the bad thing about this is when they have nothing left, some end up stealing and that is what is not wanted.

In my own experience, what usually bring addiction is ones mindset, having the mindset of trying to get rich through gambling within a short period of time .

However, I wonder what his real reason for saying this is:

I prefer to believe in the first option.

The fact is that no one can get rid of an addiction at the level of severity that he has reached. Seeking professional help is essential and the support of family and friends would certainly help him a lot to keep his mind off the addiction between sessions with the psychologist.

Taking up other hobbies, such as music, is an excellent option... learning to play a new musical instrument would take up a lot of his time and is certainly something enjoyable.

Anyway, anyone can quit an addiction, they just need to have the will, seek professional help and be surrounded by people who help them move in the right direction.

I know of few person who have made millions in one sitting and still loss it all to gamble. And making purchases could be a way of not spending the money back into gamble. So yes he might be addicted but not at a critical stage. There are chances for recovery.
