I have 3 MNs working fine in windows VPS, but I get the same thing ( pre-enabled to expire ) when I run at home on windows laptop ( firewall port 9919 open ).

clearly there is something wrong with the masternode software or methodology to setting it up, i cant get mine to start either.. i get to pre-enabled then an hour later it expires

In Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Desktop i not have Toolbar ('File', 'Settings', 'Tools', 'Help') in Desire Wallet - how to access it?
In Windows - toolbar is present.

May be it doesn't opened on VPS? I didn't find how I can check it on Ubuntu.

Your vps host might have a firewall on, and ubuntu might have been installed with Iptables. So you'll have to open ports manually. You can check them here : https://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/

iptables -I INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 9919 -j ACCEPT
iptables -I OUTPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 9919 -j ACCEPT

On VPS command 'iptables -L -n -v' (I found it in Internet) shows:
ACCEPT tcp 0.0.0.0 tcp dpt:9919
for INPUT and OUTPUT

Service 'www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/' shows me that port is closed.
I'm not fluent in Linux. May be there is another way to open port?

The daemon was running when you checked the port ? If yes, that's really strange. Try to add "listen=1" in desire.conf

I asked provider VPS about port.
What is the name of daemon? May be it is running and the only thing to do is to open port.
