I haven't seen this problem for a while and thought it was solved however take a look at this, it is worth a try:
I have helped other people with this problem by emailing them a copy of my .bin files with working connections to replace them in the C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\digitalnote folder.
You can send me an email address via private message if you like or get the files from someone you know with a syncronized wallet.
I sent you my email via PMI also have that issue with wrong time (1970) - when will be a fix released?

Just a wild guess (dev hasn't replied yet), maybe if you are using a VPN?
Also, have you allowed the program access in your firewall?
You have to be connected to the internet for it to sync of course!

I have several altcoins wallets and Digitalnote is the only one that failed to sync

I have the same problem (Windows 64bits)
I opened the log file and it says:

Nicely written jwinterm. Referring to question 3, I have sent and received messages with XDN many times. It is a great feature.
I'm not dnote, but:
1. Payment id is a 64 char hex string, which is given to the sender by the receiver so that the receiver can identify whose payment is whose. It's important for exchanges and maybe businesses in the future, it's not generally necessary for person to person. It can be random or not. There are many tools for generating random hex strings, Python or gpg or this website http://www.random.org/bytes or many others.
2. When you change the level of anonymity it changes the mixin or ring size - the number of other TX outputs that yours is mixed with when sending.

4. What is the point of any blockchain? What is the point of life on earth? Why does the universe exist? Jk, I would say it is to serve as the basis for an anonymous digital currency that allows for on and off chain messaging.
