Announcement of imminent hard fork for EIP150 gas cost changes

Posted by Martin Swende on October 13th, 2016.

During the last couple of weeks, the Ethereum network has been the target of a sustained attack. The attacker(s) have been very crafty in locating vulnerabilities in the client implementations as well as the protocol specification.

While the recent patches have led to an overall increased resiliency in the client implementations, the attacks have also demonstrated that a lower-level change to the EVM pricing model is needed.

For many users, the most visible consequence is probably that they are having difficulties getting transactions included in blocks, and full nodes are facing memory limitations in managing the bloated state.

This is our strategy to address these issues:
◾As a temporary measure to minimize the effects of the most recent attack, we recommend all miners to lower the gaslimit to 500K gas.
◾A hard-fork based on EIP 150 version 1c will be put into effect at block 2457000. This will reprice certain operations to correspond better to the underlying computational complexity.
◾A second hard-fork will follow shortly after, aimed at reverting the current “state-bloat” introduced by the attacks. This second fork will serve to remove accounts which are empty; lacking code, balance, storage and nonce == 0.

We have implemented the changes required in the clients and are currently extending and adding tests in an effort to prevent the introduction of consensus-breaking vulnerabilities.

Yeah, "adamvp"

I'm using Parity and Geth(Mist) wallet, which does not need the entire blockchain re-downloaded because of these ongoing network attacks, as temporary fix for my weekly ETH usage.

Hopefully, the developers will bundle together a set of innovations and improvements in a major release or hard fork that makes these current network attacks disappear from Geth(Mist) landscape.

Then, everyone can get back to the happy-go-lucky and blue-sky dreamy Ethereum from earlier this year and 2015 Grin

Could someone show what it should be set, preferably in English version ? Fixed amount or so?
Why does no-one who posts on this ANN ever use youtube Grin

Download latest Geth and Mist wallet from the Ethereum link to Github.

Open up CMD program on Windows 10 or whatever Windows OS you are using Grin

And, follow the instructions in this youtube clip, but change the names to latest Geth and Mist version you downloaded:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7d2WqX97EA
Good method with command line
Code:
geth removedb
instead of looking for database folder manualy, however I'd personally preffer not to sync eth till resolve will be found.. because I should resync from scratch every day or more often with this  continuous attacks and problems...

How to view different tokens I've bought? Specifically, REP and ICONOMI?

Bump! I'd like to view them in my Ethereum wallet.  Something about adding the contract info?  Any help or a link to existing instructions would be appreciated  Cheesy

As i know ICONOMI dont exist yet. Or actually they said will send 1 test ICN today. Not sure about REP.

Both are tookens on ETH. Here is a tutorial how to open Nexium tooken.

http://beyond-the-void.net/index.php/tuto-token/

You just need REP and ICN tooken contract address. That should be provided by tooken publisher so Jani in ICN case, have no ideas who published REP.

JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM) has announced that it is experimenting with using the architecture of the ethereum blockchain to create novel financial solutions for itself and its customers. According to media source Coindesk, the project was unveiled last month, and was more recently demonstrated during an industry convention in Geneva. This follows other blockchain-related announcements from competitors such as Bank of America Corp (BAC)—which is partnering with Microsoft (MSFT) and UBS Group Inc. (UBS)—in collaboration with International Business Machine Corp (IBM). (For more, see: Bitcoin Vs Ethereum: Driven by Different Purposes.)

JP Morgan's Ethereum Implementation
JP Morgan is using a private (non-public) iteration of the smart-contract focused ethereum protocol, in a system it is calling Quorum. It was developed in partnership with blockchain startup EthLab, and it is one of the first projects to come out of an innovation lab within JP Morgan known as the Blockchain Center of Excellence. Of course, the bank will keep much of Quorum's intellectual property to itself, but it is creating a developer's kit (SDK) to allow outside programmers the chance to build off of the platform. They also plan to bring other financial firms into the fold. Amber Baldet, program lead for the Quorum division, explained, "while our current applications using Quorum function within JP Morgan, releasing the software is an important stepping stone to launching projects with other organizations."

Quorum is now the second major blockchain offering to come out of JP Morgan. Earlier this year, the bank showcased a platform called Juno, meant to be a "distributed crypto-ledger" to enable quick value transfers between network parties. Quorum is novel in that by using ethereum as a backbone, it can add logic and scripting to its platform via smart contracts. Smart contracts are decentralized, self-executing pieces of code that do not need the mediation of a third-party—such as a stock exchange, legal system or government regulator. This may help the bank and its partners cut down on administrative costs, legal and regulatory oversight, and increase transparency. (For related reading, see: Blockchain Technology To Revolutionize Traditional Banking.)

The Bottom Line
JP Morgan has announced its second entrant into the blockchain fray, this time utilizing the smart contract enabled ethereum blockchain in creating a system called Quorum. Meant to lead to further collaboration, the company is allowing outside developers to tinker with it via an SDK as well as seeking partners from within the financial sector.

Even if happens (who knows when) I doubt this means much at all.
WBB has companies ready go start using it in the next month! LOL

I am not that computer savy and clear and precise explanation would be appreciated. I can't find such clear explanation anywhere online.

Amazing how much ETH is being attacked right now, and that it didn't happen earlier this year. Lots of issues over the last month, can hardly run the client.
Nobody is attacking ETHF. It is just a buggy altcoin protocol. The more it is patched the more holes are created.

I guess ETC is also buggy, then? Cheesy
https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/ethereum-classics-price-crashes-network-comes-attack/

So glad I dumped my ETC bag while it was still worth > $1

I'd be interested in knowing more about hard fork decisions for fixing these issues coming from the ETC community...

What may be the next step/ announcement from ETH/ETC ? will they finally go into POS from POW ? When ever ETH / ETC goes to POS, no other coin will be able to handle that much hashing power. Difficulty will run sky high and there will be hardly any profitable coin with gpu . Am I wrong ?

Well, Eth and Etc announcements are quite seperate (different projects, different communities, different devs).  From what I understand now, ETC is basically chillin and waiting to copy Eth updates, except for PoS.  The article notes that Etc community doesn't plan on switching to PoS when it rolls out for Eth.  Not sure what you meant by "no other coin will be able to handle that much hashing power".  Also not sure what PoS update for Eth has to do with a difficulty change or alternate coin gpu mining....
