Please note that the Maintenance Mode at Cryptopia now is for everyone, not just GUN by any means.  They lost about $2.9MIL in ETH to a hack attack.  Local police are investigating, they hope to be back up shortly.

I HAVE NOT BEEN ON FOR AWHILE. I OPENED MY GUNCOIN WALLET. A YELLOW BANNER APPEARED AND STATED THAT I HAVW THE V 1.4 VERSION AND I NEED TO UPDATE IMMEDIATELY.  IHAVE A MAC.  I DOWNLOADED FROM THE SUGGESTED MAC VERSION ON THE PAGE 1 GUNCOIN INFORMATION. IT IS NOT WORKING FOR ME. WHAT HAVE I DONE WRONG? I AM NOT EXTREMELY EDUCATED IN ALL THE LINGO USED TO DO THIS PROPERLY SO IF ANYONE CAN GUIDE ME IN "DUMMY" ENGLISH I WOULD SURELY APPRECIATE IT.
THANK YOU

OK, first welcome back to the community.  Next yes, we did send a message through wallets running 1.4, 1.5 and 1.5.1 that they needed to upgrade ASAP.  So glad you got that.  I do not use a MAC, so cannot give you detailed instructions, hoping others can help with it.  I would suggest to make sure that you go to the GITHUB site at https://github.com/guncoin/guncoin/releases and make sure you get the most current version and try it again.  We have seen no other MAC issues.

Yay?! ... masternodes.

I think 5 million is too high.

A good target for total number of masternodes in the first year is a thousand. Then in the second year maybe 2,000. I base this on some of the other MN coins out there. The grand daddy of all MN coins has around 4000 right now.

There have been "sentiment competitions" in 2018 and you can check out the winners or the top ones, look at their coin supply, look at percentage locked.

If maximum coins is 500 million, and you ideally want between 50% to 60% locked up, that's 250 to 300 million. If the target is 3000 nodes, that translates to 100k GUN for a node.

Current supply is 280 million? (Just looking at explorer data.) We can expect around half will turn into masternodes which will count about 1400 nodes. It will keep adding up over time. The rewards for those nodes will average every 2 days.

Then you'd want to get listed on the "new" coinmarketcap of masternodes, such as masternodes.online and have the platform nodes add us, such as GIN and Genarium? (I forget the spelling), and added to nodecheck.io for remote monitoring services which tag you on discord or telegram.

Those instantly expose the coin to thousands more people who have never heard of GUN. There are "portfolio" managers who do nothing but buy masternode coins and use the rewards to provide liquidity to the market.

The price follows. Remember, stick to sound fundamentals. 5 million GUN limits the average masternode count to only 50 over the lifetime of the coin. That's too small and then you're looking like those DPoS coins (delegated proof of stake) like EOS with 21 block producers, each BP using high end hardware. They did raise a billion dollars in their ICO ...

The average MN runs on a VPS that costs about $5 per month.

I don't know what a proper split between the miner/staker and the masternode would be, but I have seen 65/35 and 80/20, both in favor of masternodes.

Usually nodes have the following features:

1. Instant or swift or fast send, either with a fee, or activate by default without a fee. Not something needed really. But good to have there.
2. Obfuscation or zerocoin. You can actually do both, since obfuscation is merely CoinJoin, but zerocoin uses zero knowledge proofs which does not need a MN to do that.
3. Voting rights for governance budgets. 10% of active nodes required to grant a portion of the superblock reward.
4. They hold the collateral. Not on the node itself but locked away in the owner's wallet. This is usually referred to as a hot-cold setup. Or cold-hot. Whichever way you look at it.
5. They all hold the full blockchain. Welps, not a big deal, everyone does. But since they are public and on the masternode list, light SPV wallets know they can connect to them "safely".

You do not want to change or adapt the numbers after they have been decided upon. This will cause a hard fork, and with that a lot of people selling (and buying) and volatility. Or you could change the numbers a few times, depending on consensus, but those need to be very scarce or maybe just once.

TL;DR (summary) Try 100k.

So good to hear from you again and thanks so much for all the valuable input.  A lot of those are our thoughts as well.  My thinking is 500K GUN /MN at this point, but again, that is somewhat limiting in the long term.  But if you look at today's price, it makes more sense.  Of course, once we start coding it, prices will go up as people start accumulating GUN to get a node.  There are some technological aspects for us to overcome and deal with going from where we are to that point, but our programming team thinks it is workable.  Please stay in touch Dabs - always appreciate your constructive inputs.

It is good to see the consideration of masternodes to help progress GUN to another level.

First thought...if masternodes can somehow help even out GUN"s block times, that would be a great effect to see.
I believe that some sort of "Instant Send" (now that would be awesome!) backed by masternodes would allow GUN to be used more easily
for transactions and would build more trust/confidence in the network.
In regard to the expense of a masternode, I imagine there are costs to cover, and that should be considered in the amount needed to run
one, but am not sure what that actually would be.
My gut tells me that starting with somewhere around 500,000 to 1,000,000 may be a reasonable amount, (we could have a decent
percentage of the GUN locked up and also eventually have a couple hundred Masternodes too) and if that may someday turn out to be too
high or low a figure...change it...adapt until this works :-)

If you did go the masternode route, wouldn't you want more then 10 nodes?  That seems like a very small number to me when typically masternode coins have hundreds of nodes each.  I would think that a number 10x that would be the minimum to aim for.  Of course it depends on what actual utility a Guncoin masternode offers.

Understand and agree 100%.  I was just throwing a number out there to simplify the arithmetic.  We do not want people buying nodes for $10 and we do not want the cost to be $100,000 either.  There is lots to be considered and that is why we are always interested in community input......

Good news. Required coins for masternode?

Way to early to tell that - will be based on current prices once we start work.  At current prices, 5 MIL GUN = $1500 that is a reasonable amount for a node we think.  But again - mapping our current coin architecture where we want to go, may require several interim steps and once we have the path determined, we know prices will increase in anticipation.  The idea is to take some coins out of circulation - 10 nodes at 5MIL would do that for sure - reduce the circulated coins by almost 20% or more. But again, we have not finalized a number as yet or determined if the cap will stay the same or move.  We are happy to hear what the community thinks about it though.

Well, now that we are back trading again on the exchanges and our new code (V1.5.3) has forked and is running successfully, it is time for us to announce the next enhancements for Guncoin.  Without going into a lot of detail at this time, Guncoin will soon have masternodes available.  We have been planning it for a while and still finalizing details of how it all will  be laid out.  But we think the time is right for GUN to move that direction.  It is NOT an easy task based on where we are right now.  But we think by early spring 2019, that GUN masternodes will be an option for our community members.

You should avoid that; they ruin all communities.

How in the world do they "ruin all communities"? If anything is should grow the community and give us more visibility.

I like the idea of masternodes, especially if they do something to help keep the blockchain timing consistent, and possibly help with the funding of further development of Guncoin.
With a "better", more stable and usable currency, we would probably also end up with a larger community than we have now.

I finally got around to updating to the latest Guncoin wallet today, and while it synched quickly and the balance is accurate, it is re-indexing the entire blockchain every time I open the wallet.  I checked the config file and it has "reindex=1", is there a reason for that or can I just set it to "reindex=0"?

Thanks

Yes, after you resynced on time, you need to remove that statement from your config file.  That tells it to resync every time.  Once it resyncs again.  Close the wallet, then open the config file, remove that line, save it and open the wallet again - all should be OK.

We have a block reward decrease from 100 to 75 happening later today.  This was planned into one of the recent versions.  This should make the GUN that you have a little more valuable we hope.

Yes, GUN is again trading on Cryptopia.  And more good news we just release V1.5.3.  It will block access to old clients on the network.

does it block v1.5.2 clients too?
because until/when cryptopia and otherplaces like prohashing.com update from 1.5.2 the new wallet wont be able to receive from them.

No it does NOT disconnect from V1.5.2 and should not.  It is not a matter of what code they are running, it is a matter of whether they are using Segwit addresses or legacy addresses. As long as everyone is on V1.5.2 or V1.5.3, there are no operational issues.  V1.5.3 will automatically disconnect from older wallets and V1.5.2 can be manually made to disconnect from them.  But V1.5.2 and V1.5.3 should interoperate fine together.
