There are plenty of trials ahead, but so far we're very pleased with Heavycoin's new retargeting algorithm. The difficulty has varied dramatically over the past couple of days, yet the 24 hour average block time has been spot on.
So the mint rate seems well under control.

Are you solo mining via the wallet? I got an orphan share as well. It means that some other lucky bastard got the block just before you.
It's better to mine via the cpuminer on http://hvc.1gh.com.

Is there going to be a Windows release of the forked CPU miner that works on the heavycoin MPOS pool (the one that's currently in beta now)? I've tested using the 1GH miner posted on their HVC p2p pool page, but not getting accepts.
