I don't think P2Pool will work as I believe it still uses the getwork protocol.
Basically it's like a bunch of miners individually solo mining, but everyone shares the block reward. It's hard coded so that no one person has control.
A "standard" pool is centralized, handing out work to be done (via stratum), submitting the found solution to the network, and splitting the reward to miners. This setup is controlled by a single entity.
