I bought at the ICO nearly four years ago and have HODLed ever since. The team and community are quite nice people, which is a breath of fresh air in the toxic swamp that is crypto.

The tech is unproven, but they have weekly updates, a busy github and are getting on with the job. Very little publicity because they are concentrating on the tech rather than blowing their ico money on marketing and pumping the price like every other crypto. That gives me confidence.

It may never work because thay are trying to crack a bloody hard nut - a fully decentralised internet.
But if they manage it you are looking at the next Bitcoin or Ethereum. Potentially thousands per coin.
Keep an eye on it.

I think they have rewritten the code from C++ to Rust, that's the biggest change since 2014.

Yes this is correct, in 2015 they switched to Rust en went from over 500K lines of code in C++ to somewhere below 40K in Rust. Also the architecture from that point was changed.

Seems like Substratum is a competitor with an ambitious plan to launch by Q1 2018....
Yes, that's a major concern of mine too. Whoever is first out the gate with a credible network (that works well and has no bad press) is likely to steal the other's thunder. My worry is that it would be tragic for the SAFE project if Substratum beat them to it. Tragic too, though, for all of us, early investors in MaidSafe tokens, because clearly the price could suffer badly if MaidSafe is last out the gate and thereby might be perceived as copying Substratum (which clearly isn't the case). I also worry that there are at least two more Alpha's to release (#3 and #4), which was news to me this week, before there's even a hint of a beta release. Worrying. I do understand, though, that Rome wasn't built in a day but Substratum's published road map/timing is troubling (it seems fast!).

Not only Substratum, there is also Blockstack which looks very similar and Shift which will be using IPFS  Cry

This all should start to ring some loud bells for the Maidsafe team! The first mover advantage works only if you manage to be also the first deliver. If anyone appears who will actually deliver a working platform with the same or similar functions before MaidSafe, then I'm afraid our investment is doomed. For such an ambitious project like MaidSafe it is perfectly reasonable that it takes years to deliver... unless someone else would suddenly prove to be able to do the same in a shorter time.

They're hiring like crazy, which is a good thing:

Recruitment

In addition to last week’s new team member, @rachit, who will be working on Krishna’s team from India, we would also like to welcome @povilasb to the team! Povilas will be working with us from Lithuania. We also have Sarah Pentland joining us next Monday, she will work from our office here in Ayr and will be focused on driving more awareness of the SAFE Network and of the company in her role as Digital Marketer.

And even more news dapps coming to Alpha 2. This is a chat application. Again: no central servers needed. Mutable Data allows people
to own a certain address and location and even update it.

Someone just published the first forum on Alpha 2. Now a forum doesn't sound that difficult, but remember this is working without a central server  Smiley.
MaidSafe is probably running 100 different droplet nodes at the moment, but for a forum like this here's what happens:

- All data is split in (1 mb. max) little chunks.
- All data is encrypted and un-encrypted locally on people's computers.
- All data is shared over the different nodes. And they have no clue what's in it.
- The domain is registered in a 100% decentralized way. Even MaidSafe can not tell who uploaded/downloaded which chunk or who registered what address.

This is what Alpha 2 is all about. Give devs some APIs to work on dapps (in this case a web-dapp). In Alpha 3 we'll see vaults from home again.

It's all taking some time  Cheesy but good progress is made.
