Very good news! Via is backed by LTC network as she is fast! Moved some coins around, confirm times are amazing.

How fast is it? Could you report some numbers?

Yeah same here, can't get the wallet to run with the blockchain.zip.... syncing from scratch. See you in a few months! Cheesy

I'm still having the same issues, so I've taken a screenshot.

This is after about 40 minutes of running the wallet. Note the network usage in task manager, the downloaded amount in the debug window, and the figures it shows on the progress bar.

This was done with a fresh/new data directory.

Why is it behaving this way?

Is there anything else I can try? Like clearing any other data from Windows somewhere?

Edit: It says 4GB in that debug window now... not long after posting this.

I've considered this might just be normal for Viacoin, but it seems strange to me that it would be much less than 1% synced after so long, and so much network activity.

Same here. Throws up error. Tried it several times. Will try slooooow sync now until solution appears, which I have no doubt will happen. This dev is unstoppable.  Grin

A few hours ago Romano released optimized and even cleaner wallets, which can be downloaded at viacoin.org#download then use cryptochainer to get a zip bootstrap of the blockchain:

The legend himself replied to me  Shocked Hello!

Thanks. Yeah I'll give that a try and see if it works better.

Re: cryptochainer, I tried their blockchain (not bootstrap, just the data dir zip) too, and the wallet just threw an error at me and crashed. First time that's happened to me with a CC download too!

Anyway, I'll try the new wallet from scratch... Thanks again.

Posted this question about a week ago, but I ended up deleting it because I thought I'd fixed it (I hadn't)...

Basically, I tried running a full node (QT), but syncing was acting weird. There was loads of network activity showing on Windows task manager, and Via's built in network monitor was showing 20GB+ downloaded. The blockchain folder was showing much less than this (can't remember how much now) and the wallet was still stuck on 3 years behind.

This was after running the wallet for a few hours.

So, can anyone tell me what was going on there, and how to remedy the situation?

I'll give it another try later, but thought I'd ask in the meantime, in case anybody is familiar with this sort of issue.

Note: I've synced a number of wallets in the past without issue. It's not something that's brand new to me (only this issue is)

Cheers!

http://cryptochainer.com/dir/?page_id=365  Edit, sorry, seems they used an outdated method so doesn't work, just have to download overnight or wait until someone posts a link to one...

Great news re Segwit, once I've updated my wallet (which may take a while on this holiday connection), I plan to make another nice donation for this achievement.

Viacoin Segwit progress can be tracked on segwit.viacoin.org

That's great news! Already 70% out of 75% of the current blocks are activated at the moment.

Big advantage when holding a big bag for VIA coins since a few weeks ago but I've sold it and re-bought some now for long-term investment.

I think VIA is definitely worth it to be considered a long-term holding.

I def hope so, hopefully after august 1st the coin can go to the moon

Very good chances that it goes up after Aug 1st.

VIA to 20 USD .

I would settle for that Smiley

It's possible, but only with your help. Some things you can do:

1) Run Viacoin node.
2) Tell your friends to run Viacoin node and send them 10 Via to get them started.
3) Answer questions about Via when people post them on Twitter, Bitcointalk, or Reddit.

Basically merge mining works like this:
When a miner mines a block for LTC, it will get LTC rewards. If he is merge mining for VIA, that solved block hash is accepted by VIA blockchain as ProofOfWork (not 1:1, depending on the hash complexity, e.g. solving 1 LTC block grants you 3 VIA blocks - this is ultra simplified, just for giving a rough idea!).
So even if the reward from VIA goes near zero, it is actually still cool for a miner to do merge with VIA cuz he doesnt have to use any resources to get a small additional reward (plus the fees).

Yes, I understand what merged mining is, what I don't understand is why solving 1 LTC block grants you 3 VIA blocks since both coins are using the same hash function, but lets say this is by design, maybe this has something to do with the difference in block-times.

When the mining rewards are getting very small I don't think that miners are very interested in keeping the coin alive when they have to make changes to their code-base to keep things working. You already see this happening right now, it takes very long before f2pool starts signaling segwit for VIA, it gives me the impression that it has not a high priority for Wang Chun (if any) otherwise it would have worked already (assuming the bugs in 0.13 are solved by now).

That "3" was just an example, I have no idea how exactly that is setup between VIA and LTC, just to show that it is not 1:1.
I am not sure why the miners should loose interest. There is no real work on their side (they dont have to adjust their software, VIA does and gives the compiled code to them). Yeah, they have to install it and rollback if it has errors, buts that about it. Not bad for some free extra money, even if it is only transaction cost and no reward I feel.

VIA to 20 USD .

Not at all for quite a while, we could see a increase in value for a short time atm. Since all altcoins are suffering from the coming btc split.

Via signalled segwit, wich explains the slight pump atm.
Dont expect anything major till the market is growing aigan after the whole btcsplit happening.

All my altcoin investments are down, I could sold them and rebuy cheaper, but I was to late. Hence im holding and not even giving a damn thing about the altcoin bloodbath.
Altcoins will increase big time after this market downtime.

Have patience and enjoy the ride, go do something fun now, and come back in a month.
Via will conquer
