It was only the wind.
I didn't say you couldn't drive away some big miners - I said that you cannot convince people to mine slower. Either people will mine your coin as fast as they can, or they likely just won't mine it.
Lol... Really? Don't you see people are using Spexx's speed controller, or asking for "-e" option, do you? Either, we don't know if people really mine at full speed or not, or just go away, right?

I said as fast as they can - people want to mine on VPSes, and they want to mine on the systems they're using, therefore, it makes sense. I should have clarified - people won't reduce speed for the express purpose of lowering nethash. Everyone thinks they don't matter - when collectively, they do. But, you're right, it's just a theory.

You also said "they likely just won't mine it.", or likely mine it with a lower speed? You can't be so certain on the results especially when there are no apparent facts in support of that, for example, "people want to mine on VPSes, and they want to mine on the systems they're using, therefore, it makes sense." What about the cost, if one mines with high cost but can't get what he is desired, won't he just stay low? Surely people could just mine another coin with his full speed in order to maximize mining reward, but again that's just a guess. It's pretty much no point based on facts we don't know, but just guess. I don't expect everyone to lower speed, either. I do expect every generic miners run at full speed, and drive away the big miner, or make them lower the speed.

As I said, it was just a theory - I don't have hard evidence to support either direction.

Coin of the Magi!
How to add password to the wallet in ubuntu, encryptwallet ? Will it affect POS/POW for pool operation if encrypted? I am testing in setting up a pool for fun.
Yes, that's right; never tried on pool, I think no effect; but you have to unlock to enable PoS.

No, it wouldn't make it harder at all - it would make hashrate fluctuate wildly, though, so no one knows what their hashrate is.
That's at least not making me not too regret on the things done; the wild fluctuation would be a big concern though.

It proves my point - trying to make people mine slower will never, ever work.
Nah, there were few big miners who were there already gone; otherwise the block reward would be zero by now; guess the new miner raised up the hashrate at least 2.5 times higher.

Thanks~~

Here is Spexx's speed controller too:

Another picture from MAgi (XMG) presented on Bitcoinevent 2015 Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

made a VERY substantial acquisition Today of Magi, multiple reasons.. inclusive this video,

coins is very difficult to mine, but doable. I am very BIG on distribution aspect of crypto in general

almost never purchase coins but my believe in your work is very strong it was between Magi and several millions of BURST (no worries no promotion here) both are mentioned on the btc conference call , I looked at the exchange immediate, Magi traded at very low price.. converted FIAT and made the acquisition

thanks for the opportunity , thanks for your work, and thanks for having long term outlook on things!

To find a 'valid' reason that magi price still stays low, and never got pumped yet (though anyone else wishes too), low price just makes buying XMG as easy as said. People don't really need to worry too much; mining very much depends though. Pursuading people buying XMG is not what I meant, though I do intend.  Cheesy

correct , but I have added it to my long term portfolio and it was not a small amount.. caught it before 5% rise in the 2 hours span

even if a person collects 10 XMG a day it adds up.. 10 days and it is 100 , did not (although I should have) gone inside algo to see how feasible is to code Open CL or CUDA speed up (fpga is given but for that you will have to reach dark)

and with dark fpga devices keep raising its security every day so while buying XMG and I did so thru dark I added dark to portfolio as well

knowing this space by now, XMG is going to rise very strongly.. but I am not selling and holding as with the rest of crypto

need also check reward table and decrease on inflation (halving as such) but anyways.. my acqusition Today.. and I love it

If you want to know how feasible CUDA is, just check out djm34's hashrate Tongue

it is speculative at best, also djm34 is not the only developer in town.. waiting alternate feedback

I did this with gapcoin (sorry for cross post) all one has to do is find a speed up in a single line of code on CPU miner alone, this by itself does not break a coin.. distribution of Magi is relentless and is spreading

I know he's not the only developer in town - I am also one. My point is, it's not very hard at all to make a GPU miner for this - I removed most of the bignum calculations, so it's not even much of a pain anymore.

excellent I see your name allover the place plus your github is well visited and know in that case, magi will enter status of primecoin as one of you will release GPU miner  and with that difficulty level will accelerate , all of it strengthens network

primecoin difficulty has come down but is still darn strong, and market cap is holding

and just in in leisure do check darkcoin market cap which sports fpga devices . so for me progression of mining technology is not by itself a problem, rather continuation of development and network strength which Magi has , it seems to very persistent..

anyways.. drifting off for now, thanks for welcome and will revisit, I usually do this on times like hard fork or abandonment (abandonment I had very very few thus far on my portfolio, hard fork happened much more often)

 Cool

I'm not making an XMG GPU miner, and if I did, I would have to be seriously brain damaged to release it.

I know he's not the only developer in town - I am also one. My point is, it's not very hard at all to make a GPU miner for this - I removed most of the bignum calculations, so it's not even much of a pain anymore.

The removal of few functions does make things much easy, and I found out that that is something I've missed.

I am very curious what if we make the "iterations" be a random number, aka, depending on something, for example, the hash; seems like the removal of bignums as we just did is unlikely, would that be somehow more difficult to the CPU optimization or the GPU if that's the case?

https://github.com/magi-project/magi/blob/master/src/hash_magi.h#L329

No, it wouldn't make it harder at all - it would make hashrate fluctuate wildly, though, so no one knows what their hashrate is.

Ooooo let's all have a CUDA miner available to us. That will ensure that we can increase our carbon footprint while mining for bugger-all.

#facepalm

When will people realize that over-mining XMG decreases the block reward? It used to be a minimum value, but now it can be zero.

Answer: Probably never. I have been banging on about it for months.

It proves my point - trying to make people mine slower will never, ever work.

In addition to dev's VPS/Debian guide, can someone put an AWS/Ubuntu copy-paste guide as well?

What is the difference?
If you have Ubuntu you can compile miners from source as in OP's guude.

I never used AWS, but i have 3 different VPS providers and 2 local GPU/CPU miners (OS is Ubuntu 14.04 LTS), they all do XMG hashes.  Cool

Compiling on Ubuntu should be exactly same as on Debian. Let us know where you stuck?

Mining Co-operative
I run the miner at low priority and the wallet at normal priority under Windows.

How do I set the priority in Windows?

Two ways:

Use Task Manager to alter the priority of a running process.

Use DOS command start /low or /normal or /belownormal or /abovenormal or even /high etc to start a process at a given priority.
