I'd like to propose a change to the current CasinoCoin protocol that will require a hard fork, and I would like to get the community's thoughts on the change before proceeding.

There has recently been a general sentiment from the community that multipools have hurt the stability in the value of CasinoCoin due to volatility with difficulty. Whenever CasinoCoin becomes one of the top most profitable coins to mine on sites like CoinWarz.com, we see a jump in the network hashrate which causes a jump in the difficulty. When the difficulty adjust occurs, the network hashrate drops significantly as miners move on to the next profitable coin to mine, causing CasinoCoin to get "stuck" at the higher diffulty for more than the theoretical 6 hour difficulty adjustment time (recently, we've seen it take 15+ hours). This causes stability issues in terms of difficulity and value.

The current difficult adjust time is 720 blocks. At 30-second block times, theoretically, the difficulty adjustment occurs every 6 hours. I am considering a change that would cut the adjustment time by 1/6th to 120 blocks, which is approximately every hour.

Other variables to consider are the damping rate and maximum percentage of difficulty adjust (ie. the maximum the difficulty can increase or decrease per adjustment period). I will need to do some research to see what values are effective, but I'm open to any ideas that you may have.

Before I proceed with any changes, I'd like your feedback and thoughts on this proposal, whether you support it or not, and whether you see an upside and/or downside to such a change in the protocol.

@frufru - Yes, I plan to start working on an to update the CasinoCoin client early next week to incorporate changes in Litecoin 0.8.6.2 as soon as I'm done with updates to the CasinoCoin API. This will make it compatible with Mac OS X Mavericks in addition to other improvements since Litecoin 0.6.9.2. I'm also considering a change in difficulty adjust as detailed in my message below.

@ajochems, @Prinzert - I think now is the time to start discussing the possibility of altering the difficulty adjustment for CasinoCoin. Currently, the difficulty adjust occurs every 720 blocks. Theoretically, with the 30-second block times, this is adjustment is supposed to occur every 6 hours. But with the multipool effect and swings in hashrates, I've seen it take 15+ hours for the next adjustment to occur. I'm considering cutting down the difficulty adjustment down to 1/6th from 720 blocks to 120 blocks. I will make a separate post in order to propose this change and get others thoughts before proceeding.

@judyballhairy - Those look great! If you could post the PSD and AI files (ie. DropBox), I'll include those in the CasinoCoin assets repository as well as a future page for merchant resources.

Would it be possible to adjust the difficulty only by a small enough amount each time? I mean, instead of jumping from 0.8 to 2.7 (i.e. a factor 3.4) limit the change to something like "times 1.5" up and "Times 0.67" down. --> 0.8 can only go to 1.2 in the next step, or likewise, 2.7 can only go as low as 1.8 etc. Or would that cause another problem I'm not seeing, besides a less strict 30-second turnaround. On average, this would still yield the 30 seconds though.

One last attempt from me to get some professional casino operators interested: Is there any type of code we could share with them so that they would not have to start the wallet from scratch? Is the code on github the only resource?

Hello, have you any news about diff adjust?

Seconded.
You don't even get more coins when the difficulty drops for those 2-3 hours. When those multipools hit the blocks jump to like 500-800% to complete and the orphans shoot up.

What OS have you compiled on and what version of boost are you using? With what commandline do you start casinocoind and are all filesystem rights in place? I always start the casinocoind with the -datadir and -conf parameters to indicate which directory and file to use so i can assure the correct rights to the wallet and config file both allowing it for one specific user and denying it for the rest of the world.

Hey ajo thanks for the response;

command to start is 'casinocoind -daemon'
datadir and conf file is by default in ~/.casinocoin and it is ok.
casinocoind is compiled with boost 1.55.

When the coin hits off, there might be some people wanting physical coins.
At the moment however, I do not think there is any demand for such.

How much would people pay for a physical CasinoCoin? I have access to 3d printers, and we already have a logo for it...

@bigtop1967 - We currently have a Facebook page that I use to post the latest news and updates: https://www.facebook.com/CasinoCoin

I like the idea of a Google+ page to organize and lay out the current developments and teams responsible for different aspects of CasinoCoin. If you don't mind getting one started, I will link to it from the main CasinoCoin homepage. You can use the official CasinoCoin graphics from here: http://casinoco.in/presskit

On it.....have PM'd you...

at dedicatedpool it went from about 50 miners to now 11. anyone in this pool switch pool or switch coin?

I had to switch temporarily. I don't want to sell any CSC but I have some new gear that I have to pay for so I've moved to LTC in order to pay some bills at a stable rate. I'll be back, though.

Something definitely needs to be done about the big difficulty swings.  That should be priority #1.

I agree, just sent out a message to transcoder about making some of the changes everyone has mentioned.

Dedicatedpool had multiple long outages yesterday, I think that's part of the drop off for them. And of course the protracted high difficulty due to the multipools.
