Don't forget OS updates...

I'm sick to death of Microsoft OS updates on my farm, don't spoil the MN experience for me by telling me I need to do OS updates on that as well  Cheesy

How often does Ubuntu need to be updated?

Almost daily security updates  Grin
You should update frequently...

Based on what El Presidente just said, I shall consult my Linux Consigliere before I make any changes to the upgrade instructions given to me  Cheesy

If you want your MN to get hacked then don't ever update it. Install the release version of Win 7 and disable updates, have fun.  Roll Eyes
Linux is safer, almost any version of it and I'm pretty sure that Ubuntu has less/less frequent updates.

It's crazy running 30 rigs on Windows 8.1, every week I spend half a day on OS updates... They always say "critical" updates and give fuck all info on what's contained.

I'm having a play with PiMP at the moment, it seems nice, I'm close to making the switch.

I've got the Ubuntu 12.04.4 x64 distro on my nodes.

One of my system..

(up 1008 days)

If sshd and darkcoind are only running damon in a linux system(22 and 9999 is only opened port)
and sshd is opened to specific ips(protected by iptables, hosts.allow, hosts.deny),
updating darkcoind is enough.

Why you don't use like PiMP or SMOS mining linux distribuitons ? Literally miner up in 10-20 minutes, depending on your USB stick speed. Smiley
Auto rebooting if GPU locks up, email notification and nice web GUI to manage each node.

At least do apt-get update, apt-get upgrade and reboot afterwards. In case you are on Debian based system.
Or spend maybe 10 DRK and buy Debian/Linux for Beginners to understand a bit.

I hear you bro, I know I need to understand Linux a lot better, it's on the list...

I shall add it to my list of tasks when I'm updating my MN's, thank you...

Weekend coming Smiley Grab some spare parts of hardware, put it together and 'play' with Linux. Smiley
I am not an expert in Windows either, just use it to play games (anyone playing Tera En masse in here ?)

i wonder what's the percentage of masternode owners capable of upgrading their node themselves..
They might need to find someone who can help them, before big updates are coming (?)

Maybe it's nothing to be afraid of, but it must be kept in mind running a masternode is not a fire-and-forget kind of thing, it needs maintenance once in a while.

It's an incredibly easy process, even for a linux n00b like me.

  • Stop MN Service
  • Copy in new software
  • Start MN Service
  • Clear History

You might want to check your firewall for good measure.

The whole process takes no longer than 5-10 minutes.

Oh my... I hadn't realised how badly the coins that shall not be named are doing...

Apparently they have a plan B, and have already pre-ordered new hardware to coincide with the open-sourcing of DarkSend+. This keyboard.

by the daemon itself. The daemon is highly ddos resistant. It was developed that way. Lots of people have tried to take down nodes. Please do some research.
I see the most effective vector being, break the sloppy security on MNs run by people who have no business running them. Probably not keeping up to date with non DRK packages, won't happen until a root fault in any of the dozens of packages is identified and 90% of them don't update. Flood one MN to another, getting the MNs to ban each other with their own DDoS protections...
So the system could theoretically collapse then. That would be a fun and sad thing to watch though.
I've already written back in the discussion that there surely must be some individuals who run MNs the right way. Security being the most important thing.

And also, dos attack sounds highly inefficient because even if you'd get all the other nodes out, the data you're grabbing with your own nodes will mostly be uninteresting to you, and the trail will end very soon because the funds are constantly being anonymized. A script which monitors your node's status and launches a new node on a different service operator if needed could also be developed.

I don't know whether masternode owners turning against each other is plausible, as that kind of activity would affect the coin valuation negatively, so I doubt the incentive is there, but we'll see.

I don't really understand what's the problem with 1. is though. People use different addresses for different purposes. Those who don't, won't risk other users unless I'm misunderstanding something.

Well no, if you read about the 2nd part you would see that DDOS-ing 1000 MNs isn't even that hard. Well i'm interested if one of them has some input on the matter. As for this:
Code:
Outputs can still be linked to addresses. If you send 20 DRK and it sends all these other outputs along with it to obfuscate, the 20 DRK still ends up in someone's address. That this can be observed on the blockchain means that analysis is easy, and we all know how often people leak addresses associated with their wallet (eg. posting it up for giveaways etc. etc.) This is an immutable problem in any Bitcoin-forked cryptocurrency that exists, as the solution (stealth addresses computed w/random data) has to be enforced for every transaction from the genesis block. If you enforce it halfway through you're stuck with old outputs that don't use stealth addresses, which makes it exceedingly complex to ensure the anonymityset is not at-risk.
DRK has enforced it halfway is what he was trying to say. He said that these are just his concerns. I would like to watch a discussion between him and our developers, that would be interesting.

You can try and DDoS my masternodes, which have DDoS protection - If that fails, I will just get new IP addressess allocated or switch providers within an hour or two. This has no effect on anonymity as majority of users will have pre-denominated funds sitting in their wallets ready to spend.

So I pose the question how long can they go on trying to hit moving targets Smiley - its a non-issue

In the case of darkwallet they have one obelisk server of unknown vulnerability to DDOS.

If you try to flood any bitcoin based daemon on the open port, it will auto ban your ip.

yup

Ban from where? If the data gets to the virtual machine running the daemon it's already too late.
