Hey, I took a stab at breaking down Darksend in layman's terms. It's pretty hard to do given how smart Evan's innovation is, but here are two options:
1) First approach, didn't try to get into specifics too much
[We don't have to include this first part for those who understand the basics of crypto but might be useful for those who just heard about Bitcoin on the news etc.]
Darkcoin is a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. What makes it different is privacy through the implementation of a new technology called Darksend.
Darksend is a new approach that makes the blockchain, the list of transactions between users, private. On Bitcoin, the blockchain is public, meaning that any user’s transactions can be identified by any other user. This could be used, for example, to trace a user’s payment activities. Darksend anonymizes transactions by a process called “denominating”. When a user denominates a transaction, their payment is camouflaged in a pool of identically-sized payments created by other users. Coins are then sent from that anonymized pool to the final users. This means that another user can’t see where individual payments are coming and going from, because the only transactions that they will see are transfers into or out of the pool.
2) This is longer but touches on some of the specifics of how stuff is actually done
By denominating, multiple payers all agree to send an identical amount (e.g. 10 DRK) into the pool. Sending the same amount means that all of the transactions appear identical. The pool then acts as an anonymous middleman, sending the desired payment to each recipient. Any difference between the denominated amount (10 DRK) and the actual desired payment (e.g. 5 DRK) is returned to the payer anonymously via another pool. This means that another user would never be able to identify the payer, recipient, or transaction amount, because all transactions pass through the middleman of a pool.
Happy to hear any suggestions/corrections from folks!
